Hello, lovely lovelies♡ 'Tis Sunday here and the sun is shining. All should be well with my little, flowery world. But. It. Is. Not. I should be delighting in the warm, sunshiny rays. But. I. Am. Not. I'm sitting here feeling sad with the results of the US election. I feel sad for those of you who voted for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz to move your country forward in a more inclusive, forward thinking way. I will miss seeing these two people exuding joy and decency as they traversed the land, talking and relating to people in their inimitable way. I will miss seeing the joyfulness of these two. And now the alternative......it's enough to drive a woman to drink (just joking..... thankfully, I didn't inherit my father's alcoholic DNA). I had no idea who Tim Walz was three months ago. What a genuine, humble and kind man he is. His innate ability to interact with everyone in a normal way was refreshing. Indeed, he was a breath of fresh air.
But here we are. A country going backwards......yet again. Instead of a felon dressed in an orange jumpsuit sitting in jail, we have him soon to be sitting in the oval office. Democracy functioning as democracy intended. The people have voted. The majority wanted a flamboyantly convicted felon, an incessant liar......(who, if my darling mum was alive would've washed his mouth out with soap until there were no soap bubbles left).....a rapist, a racist, a misogynist, ("I will look after women even if they don't want me to!! YIKES!! Mmm.....thanks...but NO THANKS!!) an insurrectionist, a wannabe dictator, a climate change naysayer.......oh my goodness, the list just goes on and on. They want a president with all these seemingly irrelevant characteristics for the top job of the land. They don't want an intelligent, black woman; an astoundingly, qualified woman. Many of his cult have classified her as dumb. Mmm....one candidate is dumb and lacking intelligence, but in my very humble opinion, it ain't the black lady.
There are many reasons why people vote for the candidate they want to serve them, and indeed you are entitled to your opinion and cast your vote. But now those who have rubber stamped Trump's, and his sidekick JD Vance's promises and odious 'to do' list, all his/their crap will be coming at you, too. You faithful supporters of his, will not be immune from his idiocracy. He doesn't give a fig about you. He really doesn't. It is interesting how millions are disengaged from politics in America and don't vote. Citizens in other countries die for the privilege of voting; a privilege many in the world do not have. Amazing too, how many don't research the facts and sift the truth from disinformation, from varied sources and draw upon critical thinking skills to ascertain 'what's what'. As Noam Chomsky once said....... 'No-one can put a truth in your mind, you have to discover it yourself'.
Now, sadly for those of you who are with me finding it difficult coming to terms with how your country has voted, I feel devastated for you. I know many of you are feeling grief over what your country has become and what may be thrown at you in the future. It is fear of the unknown, isn't it?? There are no trite comments or cliches from me that all will be okay, as one would have to ignore all he has promised he intends to do. And, we all have suspicions of what he will do, as he has repeatedly told the world; and of course 'they' have their Project 25 manifesto set in place just ready to go. AND, of course, his Supreme Court plants have granted him carte blanche, BUT, after listening to many podcasts and much reading these last couple of days there are many who are 'mobilising' to counter punch his plans.......legally of course. Perhaps, just perhaps not all the legal guard rails have disappeared. Time will only tell.
But.....as it's Sunday, I suppose I should chat about some stitching. It feels irrelevant, even futile but that is what I do here; mostly crap on about totally frivolous things.
Last year, at my favourite bric-a-brac market I happened upon a sweet cross stitch. As this verse in a poem penned by Dorothy Frances Gurney has always resonated with me, this pretty went home with me.
The perfect cross stitch verse to have in my home for it is in a garden where I find peace and tranquility like no other place. It is in my garden where God hears the whispers of my heart. For it is in a garden I feel God's heart, I hear God's joy with the birdsong of the various birds which frequently visit my garden. The willy Wagtails who build nests from indiscriminate things, to the tiny wrens who live in the bushes near the pond. Though, truth be told, a walk in my garden is not working for me today.
I always wonder why these lovely pretties so beautifully and lovingly stitched by someone end up as cast off treasures in flea markets. Did someone's loved one pass and these beautifully and lovingly stitched treasures are not wanted by a family member?? Is someone purging their 'stuff' and a pretty finds its way on the to-get-rid-of-pile?? A myriad of reasons, I suppose. When my untimely demise happens, I suppose my girls will come in and clear out all my pretties. Treasures to me.....but to them.... not so. Gosh, there's a lot of stuff here.....poor darlings. A note to myself. Purge. NOW. =) And, I must say the unenviable task of purging has already started here at my little place.
Such a pretty cross stitch. And, each little cross stitch is perfect. So much love and time went was poured into this pretty.
AMEN to that. I am in total agreement with your observations and comments. A deeply disturbing situation that the US is in.
ReplyDeleteVery nice cross stitch. I love how you added the appliqué irises to it. Sew on.
Gail at the Cozy Quilter
The cross stitch you found is beautiful and you were very brave cutting into the embroidered cloth, but your creation is beautiful. I also agree with what you have said, scary times ahead.
ReplyDeleteJust so well put Kim, thank you. It all defies belief, but then we were all amazed the first time around when he had picked up those convictions. Like you I was just so sad for all those who had put their faith in Kamala. And for those who have blindly voted for Trump with no idea of what is about to hit them! Sad for the world too as it is not just the US that is going to suffer.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great little find is that pretty sampler and I do love how you have mounted it with the iris', just so beautiful. xx
Living here in far away New Zealand, away from the turmoil of the electioneering, I really thought this would be a close run thing with a Democratic win. But the people voted, as they had every right to do. But I wonder, all those people from so many backgrounds who were cajoled, will not be needed now. We will all be watching and waiting what happens to USA democracy now.
ReplyDeleteOn a nicer note, clever you to frame the pretty cross stitch the way you did.
USA is no longer the country of freedom...Not for women anyway...I don't understand how people can be manipulate so easily by liars...
ReplyDeleteYour cross stich is a beauty Kim !!!! And the fabric and iris match perfectly !
Have a lovely week lovely lady !
Hug
Anna
You cross stitch and all the finishing touches is absolutely gorgeous. My greatest sadness is for my 25 year old daughter. I'm hopeful it's only going to be a rough 4 years.
ReplyDeleteYour piece is so pretty. It will look lovely framed or as a small quilt.
ReplyDeleteWell said, Kim;))) At 81 I feel that I have been privileged to have lived in a democratic nation my whole life --and now, I fear for my grandchildren --especially my granddaughters and what they will inherit. I can only "hold a green bough in my heart and (hope that) the singing bird will come..." . All our own loved ones are truly devastated..
ReplyDeleteYour stitchery sentiment is just beautiful--warms the heart for sure, thank you for
these beautiful and uplifting photos --really appreciated hugs, Julierose *: *---(((
A liar and a con man is now our president... again. It is beyond belief and makes me sick to my stomach. But your beautiful garden stitch project makes me smile and have hope. There is hope out there in the world. Thank you, Kim, for your words of solidarity! 🩷
ReplyDeleteKim, I loved this post and you even made me laugh with your "accordian hands" line. As you know, I think this it is a sad and scary time for the US. I voted for decency and democracy and the majority of the people in the US did not. On a lighter note, that cross-stitch is so pretty. I love how you have recycled it into another item of beauty. Perhaps the maker had so very many finished cross-stitch pieces that her family only kept those that had meaning to them. When my aunt who was a painter died a few years ago, her children were left with hundreds of finished paintings to find homes for. My children and I took about 20 of them, but they were trying to rehome many more. I am sure that will happen to many of the items I have made also. Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteTotalmente de acuerdo contigo Kim y lo peor de ésta situación es que va a salpicar a todos los países, triste, muy triste y preocupante.........
ReplyDeleteEse bordado es precioso y lo has decorado con mucho gusto.
BESICOS.
It saddens me too when I see beautiful creations given away, but look people like you give them new life and make them even more beautiful, I love the vase with the Iris with them. My daughter isn't really into all of this stuff either so I am wondering what will happen to all my cross-stitching, quilts that I have made, but I think I am enjoying them now I will not worry about what is going to happen when I am gone. My craft room is full to the brim, my daughter will have a lot to get rid of for sure.
ReplyDeleteI was very shocked with the results of the election, I am a bit surprised at how many people can just over look things that were said and done by him. God can do amazing things through anyone and that is all I have to count on. At this point we can only pray.
Kim I am still feeling sick from the results of the election. Not all of my large extended family feel the same way some were actually glad and gloating where the other half were struck with grief. This has turned family members against each other. My daughter's were on the phone almost crying, nieces and my granddaughter in disbelief. At least 2 of my brothers felt as I do but 4 did not and had to gloat and act superior and they will not be able to afford the increase in prices that are sure to come and who knows what else. The suicide prevention hot lines had an drastic increase in callers by the next day and many are looking to see what it takes to leave the country and live overseas. I have tried to read and sew and distract myself but it is hard knowing what kind of man and staff will be in charge - how bad will it get?
ReplyDeleteHi Kim
ReplyDeleteThe world is certainly a scary place. We can only hope and pray for the best.
Love to see your sampler getting a new life.
Best wishes Kayc xx
All of a sudden the world has become very scary, Kay. I'm thinking a lot of hope and a lot of prayer; mixed with a lot of determination and decency to stand up to thwart evil leaders. Gosh, ain't I a happy gal today?? =) Hoping, you enjoy a pleasant week. Kim Xx
DeleteYou have said what the majority of us feel Kim - well done. Living in Canada means we will suffer the fallout perhaps more than most and we're already hearing/seeing some of it. Canada has always been known as a kind nation and we can see that kindness being erroded. Sadly, we're soon facing an election here and we are very much afraid that the person pretty much guaranteed to win holds a lot of the same views as the donald. Seeing what's happened south of us makes us understand how Hitler managed to brainwash so many people. I suspect, once the dust settles and the donald gets his own way, most of the people who voted for him will rue the day. All we can do, as individuals, is try to keep our own selves sane and try to spread that viewpoint quietly and insistently without resorting to the violence we know is likely coming. There is power in needles, threads and yarns.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Kim for your thoughtful observations on the US election. It's bad enough that he was elected, but he now also has the Senate and probably the House in his pocket. And, of course, the Supreme Court has already given him their blessing to do whatever he wants without penalty. I just read today that 38% of the population eligible to vote were either not registered or didn't bother voting. It's shameful.
ReplyDeleteOn a happier note, your rescue of that delightful cross-stich and the border you surrounded it will make a very pretty display.
Now we must take one day at a time and hope the better angels prevail in the end.
Pat
First of all, thank you. I wasn't particularly hopeful for the result, but I didn't expect to be the minority for the popular vote in this election. It's comforting to read an outsider's view that points out the same issues I have. I'm not particularly religious but what I see of your faith and conviction makes my heart sing. Just the boost I need.
ReplyDeleteSecondly - I really like how you framed that cross stitch. The whole thing is beautiful.
Dear Anonymous,
ReplyDeleteI apologise I deleted your comment so I will answer you, here. You said you voted for Trump because as a Christian you "cannot approve of murdering babies". That is your belief, your choice, but do you really have the right to prevent other women choosing their own reproductive care just because you disapprove? Surely, it is each woman's choice. Frankly, as a Christian, I am weary of seeing Christianity used to shame those who are self-determining their reproductive lives. Your's is a narrow version of Christianity used to create laws that will be used against those who do not practice or believe in that same faith. Indeed, I am tired of seeing those who are experiencing the worse period of their lives, suffering hurt and pain which those such as you cause so many people, instead of the compassion and understanding; and love they deserve. You also said you voted for Trump because the Democrats weren't going to look after the working class. The Republicans opposed paid sick leave, paid family and medical leave, universal child care, universal pre-K, tax increases for corporations and the wealthy, the Expanded Tax Child Credit student relief ....... The Republican Party doesn't sound like the working class party to me. Good luck with Trump. I have a feeling you're going to need it. His policies may well make the poor poorer and the rich richer. Time will tell.
