This last little while, my days have been pleasantly filled with scrappy happiness. After stitching some considerable projects of late, I felt a desire to stitch something effortless and easy, something that wouldn't tax my pea brain. With this thought in mind I picked up my happy, scrappy hexagon quilt once more and continued stitching. Yes indeedy, lately my days have been pleasantly filled with a little hexie love!
Me and my little Bernina have been whirring away in my sunny sewing room, whipping up hundreds of little hexagons in readiness to hand stitch them to my quilt-as-you-go hexagon quilt.
Old Man Winter has arrived downunder and though the mornings and evenings are a wee bit chilly, we have been experiencing lovely, sunny days. On these sun-filled mornings my sewing room beckons me. Stitching away with Old Man Sun overlooking my shoulder fills me with bliss.
Of course there are those days when Old Man Sun has others ideas about beaming his warmth on my humble abode. Some days for one reason or another he has decided it is a no show day, so it is these mornings I find myself sitting in front of the crackling fire hand stitching each hexie to the quilt.
Of course, long morning stitching sessions require many a cup of tea. =)
I originally stitched this quilt with the thought in mind of using it to throw over a sofa, but have now decided to make it into a queen size bed quilt for the boudoir. I know, I know, you are thinking "how many quilts does one woman need in her boudoir?". I already have my Cathedral Window quilt and my vintage linens, scrappy-licious quilt for the bed, but I have found with Old Man Sun casting his sunbeams all day in my boudoir my quilts are fading a little too quickly. Even though my favourite kinda quilts are those that are a little faded and have become squishy squashy after many washings, the quilts on my bed are paling a little too 'lickety-split' for my liking. So much time and effort goes into the stitching of a quilt that one would like to enjoy them for a long while. Hence the reason I need many a quilt so that I can interchange them often in order to keep the effects of all that sunshine at bay. Anyway, the more quilts the merrier, is what I say.
Notice how the fabrics on one side of the quilt have faded. This quilt has only been on the bed for four months.
Old Man Sun casts his sunny smile of happiness all day in my boudoir. I am that gal who every morning throws open the curtains to allow the sunshine's magical beams of warmth, light and happiness, permeate every corner. I am that gal who welcomes Old Man Sun, allowing him to embrace the rooms in my humble abode with all his brilliance.
Have you ever visited homes where on bright and sunny days the curtains are drawn all day? I have. I walk into these homes and feel a sense of darkness and cheerlessness. If only the occupants would fling open the curtains and allow the sunlight to invade each room, banishing the dimness of every nook and cranny, replacing these dark hidey holes with the whistling of Old Man Sun's bright and merry tune. If only they would allow their homes to be awash with warmth and sunny brilliance casting all those icky, dark shadows away forevermore. I don't know about you, but I find sunshine-filled rooms always bring a smile to my day. Somehow, rooms that are showcased by the sun seem to nourish my soul. Indeed, many a day I find solace sitting and stitching in a sun-drenched room.
But.....enough of me prattling on about Old Man Sun. Over the next little while I will continue to enjoy stitching my happy, scrappy hexie quilt. I also have been thinking about my next quilt. Hard to believe I know, but I am thinking my next quilt might just include a little hexie EPP stitching. Who would've thought!! =D Oh.....and there is a bag to stitch for a friend's daughter's birthday. It could be a little while till I 'chat' with you lovelies again.
Until the next time..........
This is so you!I have a new granddaughter!
ReplyDeleteI love these framed hexies, so pretty. x
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, Kay. I love them too. =) Kim Xx
DeleteYour happy hexie days sound like sheer bliss, your quilt is going to be amazing. :) x
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, Linda. Kim Xx
DeleteHello. These colors are so charming! Like you, the sun is my friend and I love the curtains open and the sun streaming through. You have a nice fireplace to enjoy on days when the sun is taking a break. Keep us posted on your progress! xo
ReplyDeleteA lot of work for a lot of beauty !!!!
ReplyDeleteYour hexagons are gorgeous !!!
Keep going !
Big hug !
Anna
I love a sunny room but these days I turn my quilts down to the back because they sure do fade in a short time.
ReplyDeleteI love to let the sunshine in, too and also change out my quilts often to keep my bedding from fading too much. I have a nice collection of heirloom quilts but am slowly building my own collection (made by me). Its starting to get hot and sticky here in MO, USA, and I've a few indoor activities planned this week. Enjoy your project! Zenda
ReplyDeleteKim, I was so glad to find this post! I want to sew some hexies for a quilt but all I know is hand sewing them. I'm afraid my eyes are just not up to a lot of close hand sewing. Do you do yours by machine? I'd love some suggestions! Have a blessed day.
ReplyDeleteLook at all those hexies! What fun.
ReplyDeleteHexies are the best fun, Sally. =) Kim Xx
DeleteWe can never have enough quilts. I continue to love your hexi's (DO you have a tutorial on your blog...as I'd like to give them a try) It's fun to watch you go into winter as I go into summer.....soon I'll be stitching on the patio in the mornings, sipping my tea as well. HAPPY DAY to ya my friend!
ReplyDeleteI love to see the sunshine in the house, I'm amazed though at how quickly your quilt has faded. I have hexie love, your quilt is looking wonderful as all your quilts do xx
ReplyDeleteHow delightful of you to visit, Cheryl; thank you. The Aussie sun is very strong and bright; a lot stronger than the English sun. I love it.....but my quilts do suffer. Of course this just means I can stitch oodles and oodles of quilts. Hope you enjoy the loveliest of weeks. Kim Xx
DeleteSuch a delightful way to spend your days when winter keeps us indoors. The winter sun is allowed to stream in here too. There is a softness to it that makes rooms look dreamy. Keep making quilts for your bed. I'd like one for each month of the year.
ReplyDeleteWhat an excellent thought; a quilt for each month of the year! I had better get stitching, there is not a moment to lose. =) Thank you for visiting me down here in wintry Tassie, Ann. Kim Xx
DeleteOh Kim, you know how much I adore your Hexie quilts!!!! Why oh why, do I not make one?? I have ooodles and oodles of fabrics in my sewing room. What is stopping me? Could you just come over here and give me a little nudge to get one started? I just think the hexies are so cheerful and happy. Enjoy your sewing in your happy place. xx
ReplyDeleteA lovely day to you too Kim! This is a warm and sunny post, colorful to the brim and just perfect to go through. I am a sun person - I cope well with greyness of the day if the weather decides to have a tantrum - but need brightness and sunshine to tickle my soul so in my place windows are big and wide, curtains are transparent and furniture is white so I have the feel of being outside all the time, savouring good vibes.
ReplyDeleteI love your new quilt in the making - never cease wondering (and drooling) over your mind-boggling beautiful fabric!
How wonderful it all sounds to be in your sewing room on a nice sunny winter day. Sitting by the fire stitching is enticing too. What a perfect way to pass the winter away. We are having weather near 90F here so all our energy is spent staying cool! I loved visiting with you today....have a wonderful week!
ReplyDeleteOh Kim, all your hexies are so magnificently adorable. Your quilts are amazing and beautiful!!!
ReplyDeleteI am also a sunlover, our province Sealand has the most hours of sunshine in our country.(Luckily for us)
Its a pity that King Winter is on his way with you, he brings cold and rain brrrrr.
Loes, I am actually surprised at "King Winter" thus far as he hasn't been too nasty, though I won't get too excited as I know the cold and rain will come. The mornings and evening are a wee bit chilly, but of late the days have been lovely and sunny with clear blue skies. Enjoy your warm sunny days. Thank you so much for your lovely comments, lovely Loes. Kim Xx
DeleteThose photos look so cosy Kim!! Love those teetering, tottering piles of hexies! Enjoy your hand stitching by the warm fire, and yes, tea is a must :)
ReplyDelete-Soma xx
i am a drapes open, blinds open kinda' girl. when it gets as hot as it has been, i keep everything closed upstairs - but downstairs each room it bright and beautiful. i too have a fading problem - i call those drapes designer - one of a kind drapes!! hehehe
ReplyDeleteyou measure all the fabric pieces?? when you iron them, do you measure those or eyeball it?? i didn't see any pins!
your pictures are lovely, always wonderfully done!!!
Your hexies are gorgeous! I've never seen them done like that. What a fun winter sewing project. LOVE your fabrics, Kim!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, Kathy. I am loving these fabrics too; so bright and happy. Yes indeedy, I can foresee many a cold Winter's day stitching my hexies in front of the fire. Thank you for popping by. Kim Xx
DeleteKim, I am with you! Throw open the shutters and let that sun shine in!! :) That's the first thing I do every morning is to open all of the blinds. I too have been in homes like that. They feel stuffy and uninviting. I love your hexies! Lots of work, but you amazing lady will have a queen quilt in no time. I know what havoc that sun can have on them. For that reason I don't leave them out on the porch even though I would love to!
ReplyDeletehugs,
Jann
I just knew you were a sun shine kinda gal, Jann. =) Yes, I have had quilts on the porch and they perished very quickly. Let's hope my hexie morphs into a queen size pretty in next to no time.....alas, somehow I think it could take a while. Thank you for visiting, lovely Jann. Kim Xx
DeleteSuch pretty, happy colors and prints - I can see why you love sewing, surrounded by these cheerful hexies and enjoying the sunshine. We are currently sun-deprived, I'm afraid, and it is more like winter than summer. I am calling it Junuary......I almost lit the fire, like you. It does look so nice and cozy there and I am a true believer that you can't have too many quilts! Happy, happy sewing! Hugs xo Karen
ReplyDeleteGorgeous hexies Kim, another beautiful quilt in the making. I love to let the sunlight in but a lot of people in Spain have to lower the blinds against the hot sun.
ReplyDeleteI'm with you in keeping the curtains open during the day - unless the heat and humidity are really high in which case I keep them closed to try to keep the heat at bay. My DH really feels the heat so anything I can do to try to keep him cool. I'm loving your hexxies - am I right to assume they are reversible?
ReplyDeleteKim, I am with you. The more sunshine the better! I absolutely love natural light. I think I would just shrivel up and die if I had to live in darkness. I LOVE your hexi quilt pieces. One can never have too many quilts! xo
ReplyDeleteOh Kim, your Hexie quilt is look fabulous!! So love those fabrics and it looks like you have a good stack there ready to be sewn together. I too love the sun and like to open my windows wide, the last few days the heat has been so hot that I wait until late morning to open everything wide and give the sun a chance to get a little higher in the sky and that way it stays a little cooler in the house. My sister in law use to always have her curtains shut and it was so depressing when we would go over. I have a couple different quilts I use on my bed too, change them for the different seasons. I would so love to make one myself :)
ReplyDeleteI agree. There's nothing like sun streaming in to add cheer. Lovely Hexies. So colourfully gorgeous. Can't wait for the grand finish.
ReplyDeleteI love your crackling fire. Such a peaceful, comfortable spot to sit and relax and enjoy your tea and your stitching.
Enjoy!
Such a lovely hexie quilt you have growing there. I've never known anyone shut their curtains all day - being in a duller little country, we rejoice in all the sun we can get :D
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness! The colors give me the tingles! They are so bright and complimentary! Well done, Kim!
ReplyDeleteThank you, sweet Pom Pom. They are bright and happy colours, aren't they. Thank you for visiting. Kim Xx
DeleteI love that happy pile. I love cheerful colors. I love sunlight coming through the window. This is the place for me.

Wishing you a most lovely remainder of your week,
I'm sending hugs and ever much love to you
XOXO Dany
Oh wow! I love those colourful hexies, Kim! Such pretty fabrics. A lovely summery project for the cold winter evenings. You have certainly made some wonderful quilts!
ReplyDeleteWe usually throw our curtains wide open, but we have a heatwave here in England at the moment. Today they have forecast 32 degrees ..... so our curtains are closed where the sun shines on the windows, and are open, with windows open too, where it's not! And the poor cats are struggling to find somewhere cool to lay!
Hugs,
Barbara x
The hexies are so gorgeous with cheerful colors. Wish i could quilt like this. Beautiful blog btw. New follower here. Have a fantastic day :)
ReplyDeleteThis is the very first hexie quilt as you go that I have ever seen . . . and I have fallen head over heels in love with it. Is it your own design? I can't wait to give it a try. Thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteYour blogging sister,
Connie :)
Reading your magical post is healing like feeling to my heart my dear friend!
ReplyDeleteStitching and quilt seems meditation for you as you mention them with inseparable part of your beautiful personality.
Your designs and quilt are stunning .colors are alive and pretty .
I live in an Asian country which has terrible summers when Sun seems like enemy to most but I cannot resist my deep love for him .since beginning I found him so close to my heart and just to have lots of sunshine I requested hubby to make an house with big front yard and small garden. I absolutely loved your bed receiving kisses from Sun .I love such houses .dark houses seems lifeless to me.
Lots of best wishes for each project you choose my friend!
I to love to get up and let mr. Sun come in and visit each room.. it is a wonderful glorious feeling... I love you new quilt in the making.. I wish I was close by to learn... nice to visit with love Janice
ReplyDeleteHello lovely Janice, it would be lovely to live by each other and stitch a hexie or two.....and of course drink tea from one of your many pretty teacups. =) Thank you for visiting; may you have the most wonderful of days. Kim Xx
DeleteKim, these hexies are so pretty! I think I would like to try making some....I imagine stitching them together by hand must take the longest time...hope you show us when you get to that point! It's going to be a masterpiece, I can tell already! Your room is such a happy place and it could never have one too many of your beautiful quilts! Wow Kim!

Linda
Thank you, lovely Linda. It would be wonderful if you were to stitch a hexie. Yes, the stitching by hand seems to take the longest time, but if I stitch a little of my hexie each day, it grows. =) I will most definitely show my hexie when it is finished.....you will probably be sorry you asked, given my propensity to take many photographs. =) My room, indeed my humble abode is the most happiest of places. Thank you so very much for your sweet comments, Linda. As always you have put a sunny smile into my day. Kim Xx
DeleteThese hexies are gorgeous. I so want to do these for my bedroom. I already have two hexie quilts for my bed, one I rescued from a quilting shop display that was going out of business and the other a grandmother and her grandson walked into my shop selling a quilt she had made for him, She explained he need the money worse than the quilt and she did not have the money to help him. I have had that one for twenty years+. Since I never make me anything, this is the perfect quilt for me. Thanks for the inspiration to do so.
ReplyDeleteLove this hexie quilt. I don't know why I'm not making one. As for the sun, yes open the shades!
ReplyDeleteI don't know why you are not making one of these hexies neither, Linda.....you would love it. =) Thank you for visiting. Kim Xx
DeleteOhhh so pretty - we have the same taste in fabrics and quilts. I have lots and lots of quilts for the bedroom - two quilt racks full of my lovelies and a nice stack on the treadle sewing machine in the bedroom. I like the way this quilt is coming along - just wonderful and welcoming. I adore sunshine and the curtains are always open in our home, as soon as possible and as late as possible. I too wonder why people would have windows and not throw them open every chance they get - makes the house so much happier and it seems so much bigger too - let the sunshine in. Happy coming weekend - we are having a very cool summer - some days we have to be indoors quite early - but I enjoy every minute on the deck with my flowers and my stitching.
ReplyDeleteDarling Kim, you have the patience of a saint. That is all ;-) Mimi xxx
ReplyDeleteJust stumbled over your blog and enjoyed seeing your photos of this gorgeous quilt in the making. You can never have enough quilts for your boudoir. Enjoy stitching.
