A New Quilt♡

Hello lovely friends♡ It's late Sunday evening here, where, for most of you in your little part of the world, Sunday is just awaking♡

Early this week I had a request for a quilt to be made to be used as a throw for a nursery nursing chair. And, the request was if possible could it be finished in a week or two. Also, if at all possible could I use Australian theme fabrics mixed with a few solids and green prints. And......not a lot of bright fabrics, please. Though, some brighter greens thrown into the mix were acceptable.

Fortunately, I have remnants of fabrics with Aussie animals and flora so I pulled these out, with various green prints and a few solids; sending  a photo to the mum-to-be for the okay. So, receiving the green light I began.

I stitched 4" squares together. Fabrics where sweet joeys are peeping out of mumma's pouch and cockatoos and kookaburras enjoying a laugh in an old gum tree. There are platypuses chasing fish in and out of reeds deep in riverbeds and other platypuses sitting on the river bank fishing with their pelican chums. Koalas are catching rides on the back of jumping kangaroos and there are a couple of chubby koalas enjoying a banquet of eucalyptus leaves.. There's  a little gum nut, Snugglepot......or is it Cuddlepie (of May Gibbs fame) setting sail in a little tinnie with her friend, Koala. There's even a blue fairy wren singing a merry tune where more little gum nuts listen, enthralled. Such a sweet fabric. The other fabrics added to the mix are spotty spots,  Australian floral designs and a few Kona solids. The binding is Kona Bluegrass which do-si-do around the quilt quite nicely.

The backing fabric  is very different to the quilt front. It's a fabric with cute doggies all over. An interesting choice but it is what the mum-to-be requested. But then, it's really two quilts in one. Double the fun and whimsy.

I bought the doggy fabric when out shopping with my daughter in San Fransisco. It was the first time I stepped over the threshold of Hobby Lobby. It's certainly a shop with all things craft, isn't it?? I thought at the time you would be hard pressed to not find what you wanted. Though, I must say for fabrics and pure wool I prefer smaller independent patchwork and wool shops.

I'm still bemused by my little shopping expedition in Hobby Lobby. My daughter and I were at the cutting counter and as the sales assistant was cutting the doggy fabric  she asked me what country I was from; to which I replied, Australia. At this point she told us that she would never travel to Australia. Intrigued, I asked her why ever not. She went on to say that she would be terrified to visit Australia as it was a communist country.  My daughter and I looked at each other simultaneously and silently questioned.......What??!! When??!! How??!! I wanted to enlighten this dear lady that perhaps she should board a plane and dip her conservative toes in the land down under and experience for herself a land where government  serves the people and, for the most part endeavours to make the lives of their citizens better, but I thought better of it. Of course, the both of us walked out of the shop incredulous, chortling as we went. Truly, the ignorance of some Americans is astounding. I must say when the sad time arrived when I had to say  au revoir to my daughter and son-in-law, I said to my daughter to wish me luck as I departed for that communist land in which I live; the home of her youth. I'm still chuckling over the dear lady's thoughts on Australia. =) Yes indeedy, I'm thankful and feel blessed to live in Australia.

Oh, while I'm broaching the subject of politics, another aside. So, so sorry.......but you know me. =) We're having a federal election within the next few months and can you believe, we have a right wing conservative party called the Trumpet of Patriotism!! It is a party where their intention is to get an elected representative or two into the hallowed halls of Parliament. You have got to be kidding!! Imagine my surprise when one evening the Trump-like, bloated and over-fed billionaire leader of this party took over my TV screen in an over-long advertisement sitting with Tucker Carlson??!! What??!! They were trumpeting on and on and on, how Australia needs to have Trump policies. I don't think so!! I had heard Carlson had been doing the rounds here, spewing out his buddy Trump's propoganda. However did he get into Australia?? Truly Border Force, you  should be more particular, indeed, more selective with whom you allow to enter. Such a pity his entry visa wasn't denied and sent packing on the next plane. Ahh....us Aussies are just too friendly. =)

But....back to the quilt. I machine quilted vertical and horizontal stitching lines a quarter of an inch in from the seams. I was half way through the quilting where I discovered an almighty boo boo. The backing fabric is upside down. The things one does when one isn't thinking. In all my years of quilting I cannot recall doing this before. Truly, I wonder about my muddly head sometimes. Not to worry. I sent a photo to the mum-to-be as I really didn't want to spend hours and hours unpicking stitches, and all's good with her. We decided to call it a Topsy Turvey quilt.

Oopsa daisy. =)

Another finished quilt. A speedy quilt which was pieced and machine quilted in a few days. I enjoy fashioning small quilts. It's a welcome change to huge queen bed size quilts which seem to take me forever. I always find simple patchwork quilts where squares dance happily with each other, charming. Fingers crossed the mum-to-be likes this pretty.

Hoping you enjoy a pleasant Sunday lovely lovelies......lovely friends; joying in something you love to do♡ I enjoyed a lovely day, though it was a busy one. Somehow, I managed to squeeze in the hand stitching of the binding of the topsy turvey quilt. Remember, keep your light shining in your little part of the world. Mine is shining brightly here♡ Take care♡

Until the next time......

  2. A very cute baby quilt. Sometimes it's fun to collaborate with someone on a project. I do worry about the state of our education system here in the US. At least it gave you a chuckle, but it's a bit scary many of us. Hope you week is off to a good start.

  3. I’m sure the mom to be and her baby will be delighted with the quilt you have made! I love all those Australian animal prints you have used! Sometimes a quick finish is just the ticket! Good thing we all have deep stashes to use in these situations! We once met a man in a restaurant in the US who told us that everyone in Canada carries a gun openly….so not true! Not sure where such people get their information!
Take care! Gail at the cozy quilter.

The soft greens pair beautifully with the cute squares....and the backing doggy print is so cute, too. Nice work hugs, Julierose

  7. Fun colors; great prints. Glad you could deliver the request so easily! I have yet (and perhaps never) step foot in a Hobby Lobby - that exchange was just too far out! LOL

  8. Isn't it wonderful when your stash can accomodate a last minute request! Lovely quilt and I'd say it hit all the marks of the request. I am so sorry that our current political malaise is infecting the rest of the world. I just hope it doesn't reach pandemic proportions!!

  9. The colours on the newest quilt are really lovely, well done. The lady who thought Australia was a communist country was probably mistaking it for Austria.... not that Austria is communist either, but Americans are so ignorant about anything the other side of their borders. !!!!

    1. Perhaps, but I don't think so from what she was saying. I have found that many Americans are not well informed about other countries. And, as we see what is playing out there at the moment they are ignorant with what's going on within their own borders. It's so sad what has happened there within a couple of months. Sadly, critical thinking is not high on the list for some. Thank you for your lovely visit and sweet words re my little quilt. Hoping you enjoy a lovely week. Kim Xx

  10. That is such a sweet quilt, Kim! I love all the fun prints, and those soft colors. So impressed that you could have that ready to go in just a couple days! Tucker Carlson is just full of you know what. I'm sorry he is now trying to influence Australian politics. At least he has no real power, unlike Elon Musk who is over here creating all kinds of chaos and cruelty. Mike and I would like to move to Australia! (unlike your Hobby Lobby friend, lol!)

    1. Lovely Di, I've made a couple of quilts from the Australian theme fabrics so yes, very fortunate to have a few left in my stash. Alas, some are all used up now and there are no more in the shops. I think they went like hot cakes. =) Thank you for your sweet visit and kind words. May your week be a wonderful one, too. Kim Xx

  12. OMG - I am amazed at the stupidity of someone from San Francisco to think that. Hobby Lobby has very conservative owners and and won't pay for birth control on their medical insurance plan and they are also against a lot of things and they are Trump followers. They close on Sundays so everyone can go to church and spend the day with their families as they think you have to do that to be good Christians I guess. A lot of people in the US have boycotted the store for years and will not shop at them. I mus admit I go inside once in awhile but rarely - I don't care for their fabric. Sorry to hear of the Conservative group running for election in Australia - hope they disappear for you

  14. Isn’t that *darling*?? 🥳 Clearly, specifications for the quilt were not constraint but spark for your creativity. You must have had a blast, combing through your fabric dowry to collect pieces that fit the theme; I’ll bet there were even some happy giggles when you found just the right ones! 😜🥳 That will be a quilt to both use and cherish, and knowing you as we do, loving thoughts imbue every.single.stitch.💗💓💗 Hugs, Nancy O.

La mamá quedará encantada, seguro. BESICOS.

  16. Beautiful baby quilt, love the fabrics and colors. I am horrified by what is happening in Washington, D.C, the city of my birth. Hope you have a great week Kim!

  17. That is a beautiful baby quilt Kim, lovely fabrics front and back and it really doesn't matter if the dogs are upside down, the quilt will be turned around to look sat anyway. or to be played with. Some Americans are scarily ignorant sometimes - I remember one telling me NZ was in Europe and being very sure they knew better than me and I was born and grew up there!!!

  18. Such a lovely quilt for the new Mum and her baby, who cares if the doggies are upside down on the back. You do live in "Down Under" after all. Let's hope that the idiot and his party dont get too many votes in the election.

  19. You are so quick to whip that quilt up Kim - its just wonderful & I love the doggie Bow Wow fabric you have chosen for the backing too. So special. I did smile at the sales girl saying you lived in a communist country - isn't it strange how people can get the wrong idea at times. When I travelled overseas in my younger years people always seemed to think New Zealand was a part of Australia. So maybe we are both communist countries 😉😉

  20. What a great little quilt - and a speedy finish. So much disinformation and ignorance in America. I wish we could just leave them to get on with it but unfortunately they have far too much influence around the world. Have a peaceful week Kim. xx

  21. You work fast Kim ! Your quilt is beautiful and cute ! Great job !
I used to say that USA is in an other planet...Sad that some want to join this kind of world...
    Have a shinny week !

  22. How kind of you to drop everything and fashion a charming baby quilt for a new Mom. It will certainly be welcomed and well-used. As Karen pointed out, Hobby Lobby is not universally admired here in the US. The owners are supposed Christians, whose behavior is anything but Christian. Many quilters and sewists here will not shop there because of the owners beliefs and behaviors. And, yes, many Americans are sadly lacking in knowledge of civics, economics and world culture. You are right that critical thinking is also avoided by many. It's certainly unfair that the destructive machinations of the current administration will have world-wide effects.

  23. I'm sure that quilt is going to be loved to the moon and back.
Ha ha to the thought that you live in a communist country. Little did that person know that her own country is rapidly heading in that direction! I'm sure there are Americans who firmly believe us Canadians all live in igloos in the winter, if not us having snow all year.

  24. A week or two :-) you're big, dear Kim.
It's turned out to be a beautiful quilt, both front and back. And the hand stitching is a must.
Greetings to you in beautiful Australia.
    Hugs from Viola

  25. Oh, how sweet, dear Kim! I love the whimsical fabrics and colors - so fun for the new Mum to look at while rocking her new babe. I love Hobby Lobby and my daughters and I regularly take a day to have lunch and do a bit of shopping there. The closest one is a good 45 minute drive away, so we always make a day of it. I had to laugh at the lady who declared she would never visit Australia because it is communist. She probably got it mixed up with Austria and a time before WWII. Clearly, she flunked history and geography. I'm sorry that you had to host that awful Tucker Carlson in your beautiful country. And I'm sorry at what has happened to our beautiful country, but you can see we are fighting hard to take it back. We are so depressed and broken hearted. We need our friends to stick with us during this awful, disgraceful moment in history. Hugs x K
