Oh Spring......How Beautiful You Are ❣

The loveliest of welcomes to you❣ A lovely welcome to my little spring place where the sun is smiling upon me, and my flower-filled garden. It is early morning and I am sitting here in the stillness of my garden with pretty teacup in hand, drinking in the beauty before me that God has gifted me.  For it is He who paints the garden before me with his impressionistic brush strokes. Sweet Maisie is here too, as she is my shadow. It is quiet. A beautiful hushed quietness interrupted occasionally by the  birdsong and the whispers of the flowers and trees. Every now and then ripples of water are heard where fish pop up their heads to see if there might be a morsel or two to feed upon. My little spring world is rejoicing in blues and purples and pinks. The lilacs, irises, rhododendrons, foxgloves and granny bonnets swaying in the gentle breeze are as pretty as a picture. Why, the foxgloves are reaching ever so tall up to the blue, blue sky. Would you believe some are over 6ft.....they truly, truly are. There were only a few foxgloves last spring but oh my goodness, this year there has been an explosion of these gorgeous flowers. I can only imagine that last season's seeds danced and floated on the breath of the wind, finding a place in which to settle deep in the earth in readiness for this year's show. They truly are magical. Why, I almost expect to see little fairies peeking from inside the bell-shaped flowers, smiling at me.

Though a lot of time has been spent in the garden this week (the weeds are taller than the foxgloves) I have started a new quilt. A simple quilt using clamshell patterned papers; once again using fabrics from my stash and smidgens of scraps. Yet again, I want to use only the fabrics that are sitting in my armoire. Yet again, a completely hand stitched pretty which will be the size of a throw. Clamshells are a lovely pattern; one which I have always wanted to make. There are some gorgeous ones out there but mine is going to be one where scrappy delight is evidenced everywhere. No plan really, just playing with little clamshells and placing them here, there, everywhere, in a fashion which is pleasing to my eyes. Such fun! But then, scrappy quilts where playing is the only prerequisite, with an explosion of patterns and colour, are always the best fun for me.

As I sit here I think of you and send lovely thoughts and prayers your way. Some of you are ploughing through difficult days. Some of you are battling health issues; COVID is raging worse than ever in some countries; and America....well what can I say?? I admit I look at the TV in complete disbelief at the theatre that is called American politics. Quite bizarre really. I am fascinated by it all....and deeply saddened, too. A new narrative is  beginning (thank goodness). The page has  turned over and a new page is being written, a new chapter being drafted and then recorded; 'tis time to move on. 'Tis such a pity that this most  un-presidential president will not realise this and accept it. I suppose for the most part, the history books will not look favourably upon these last four years of the outgoing administration.

I am thinking of you my lovely friends. Wish oh wish I could tap on your front door (I know I say this all the time....but I do) give you a hug and the biggest bouquet of sweet-smelling lilacs, rhododendrons, foxgloves, orange blossoms....all bunched together, cinched with a pretty ribbon; to bring a smile to your day. Why we could chat about tea and cake, our families, flowers and gardens, fabrics and quilts, friendship, faith, why....perhaps even politics (just a little, I promise....and if you and I don't agree, then we would be kind and listen to each other in a respectful way even if we have different points of view, wouldn't we....because that is what grown ups do); oh, there is a gazillion things you and I could natter about. I often think I cannot change the world but I can make a difference in my little world each day, for the better; showing kindness, respect, unselfishness and love, to those I might meet. I suppose it's not much really, but for the other person who is hurting,  perhaps my smile, my kindness; a pretty flower or two will be that one little thing that might bless their day. You just never know, do you??

So, as this world spins around on its axis and history is being played out, I suppose I will just keep on chatting about stuff and nonsense, and keep on sending you much too many happy snaps of my peaceful little place where flowers and fabrics and all things pretty, abound. Take care my lovely friends and please, keep well. Make time for the whispers of loveliness this fine day. As for me I am going to enjoy some lovely clamshell hand stitching, because today is Sunday, and I always try to delight in a little slow stitching on Sunday, of only for a little while.

Until the next time.......................

  3. It is always a joy to visit you. It is indeed like coming to your door, smelling the beautiful flowers and being treated with tea and fabric. Your clamshells are a beautiful floral extravagance just like your garden. Clamshells are on my list of quilts to make, just like hexagons. Some day.

  4. I love this post. Your beautiful words and your flowers, oh your beautiful flowers. I love lilacs and foxgloves. The clamshell quilt looks pretty, but is it hard to sew? It looks like it would be. I was so happy when Joe Biden won the Presidency, but I never thought that trump and the republicans would behave the way they have. I fear that trump will do so much more damage in the next few months. At least I can come here to your wonderful blog and escape from all this mess we are having in the U.S.

  5. Delightful as always to see pictures of your beautiful garden - all those gorgeous flowers - while here we are watching the last leaves turn colour and fall. Its a windy morning with rain to come later so no doubt plenty of raking for me to do tomorrow. A clamshell quilt is on my list - I will, one day. Your fabrics are so pretty and it is looking gorgeous already. I think the whole world breathed a sigh of relief at the news from the US - a new, brighter era for us all I think. xx

  12. Oh how I wish I could visit that lovely and peaceful garden! Truly beautiful as are your quilting projects. I have to admit - I was going in for a close up of the beautiful hexagon quilt underneath the clamshell. Gorgeous. I too hope the last 4 years are just a footnote in American history.... now if they would only accept the will of the people and move on. Happy stitching today in your lovely spot. I think I might bring some of mine outside while watching the chicken today.

  15. How delightful to visit your lovely garden and feast my eyes on such delicacies as your iris, lilacs, foxgloves and more. The current state of affairs here in the US is incomprehensible, even to those of us who live here. So I think I shall just come visit the tranquility of your garden photos every morning instead of reading the news. Thank you for brightening my day.

  17. Being un-presidential is exactly why 73 million voters want him as our president. He is not a politician! China owns our media, Hollywood and most especially the Biden family. The amount of voter fraud is enormous. All in Bidens favor. How could that mathematically be? Trump will be re elected. You can take that to the bank.

    2. Thank you for responding. I was sitting reading this post...mesmerized as always by the lovely photos and exquisite sewing...only to be flabbergasted by the comments about our American election. For someone not here, especially only getting information from tainted news sources, to speak about our President as being "unpresidential" saddened me. Mr. Biden is as crooked as a dog's hind leg...but the shameful media did not report it and the disgraceful FBI sat on information regarding his dealings with China, Ukraine and other countries without disclosing the illegal doings. DJT---BEST president ever. I truly believe that God allowed him to become president precisely because he is NOT a politician and God-willing will prevail in this travesty of the 2020 election. God bless America and God bless Donald J. Trump.

    3. Ellen, I am supposing from your comment that you are one of those whose vote is to be counted in that 73 million votes. I am afraid my vote would not have been included. There are many reasons why this is so.

Foremost, is the way your “un-presidential president” has totally mishandled the COVID pandemic, under his watch. I cannot believe that 246,000 (and rising) of your fellow countrymen have lost their lives because of his mismanagement and inadequacies in dealing with this crisis. His response has been sadly under-whelming. This Thanksgiving there will be 246,000 families who when they sit at their tables there will be one (and in some families more) empty chair where once their loved one sat, conversed and laughed. Their beloved family member has more than likely died in a hospital alone, without their families gathered around them to say their good-byes. I cannot begin to comprehend this. It's just so tragic. Your health care workers must be exhausted, grief stricken; as day by day they go above and beyond the call of duty to provide care to their patients. Again, I cannot imagine how they feel, nor indeed, how they cope when yet another person passes from this earth, under their care.

The total lack of empathy and misinformation ‘your president’ has declared regarding COVID is quite frankly alarming. When he has stood before the journalists and they have asked questions re COVID his responses have been bizarre, quite frankly. His comments i.e. “it’s a hoax”, ”we have it totally under control.”, "It’s one person coming in from China. It’s going to be fine.”, “it will be over by Easter”, “It’s going to disappear. One day, it’s like a miracle, it will disappear.”, oh, and here is a good one……”we’re rounding the corner”. Really??!! Fakes news?? I think not. Because I have watched ‘your president’ stand up in front of the news cameras and my eyes have seen and my ears have heard these astonishing statements spilling out of his mouth. I am totally nonplussed why he doesn’t listen to the medical experts.

But hey, what do I know. I am just an aussie way down here at the bottom of the world, where for the most part, both our state governments of both political sides of the hallowed halls of parliament, and our Prime Minister have done a good job re the COVID crisis. Surely a monster, such as COVID requires a bi-partisan approach. Sure, mistakes have been made along the way but day in, day out our politicians have done their darndest to provide information and put practices in place to deal with it. Our politicians have regarded the science; have listened to the medical experts, because after all, they are the experts. Every day the state premiers and when needed, our prime minister, have stood before the journalists of the press gallery and tried to answer the hard, the impossible questions the journalists have thrown at them. And I might add, they have done this in a considered, measured, polite and respectful manner. Sure, some journalists have tried to goad them, but isn’t that expected from some. Regardless of the asinine questions some journalists throw out, our leaders have not shouted at the reporters, pointed their fingers at them and told them to shoosh as speaking to a child. They have not thrown a tantrum, refused to answer these impossible questions, turn their back and walk off in a huff. No they behave like leaders. I don’t know about you but I expect my leaders to be intelligent people who at least try to answer those impossible questions and formulate practices and solutions to help and take care of the people they serve. I expect my leaders to be grown up and tackle these impossible problems.

Ellen, I suppose, if you and I were to sit and chat about our differing points of view we would just have to agree to disagree, but I would like to think we could do this in a grown up way. You have visited my place for one reason or another, so in any case, even if you totally disagree with my ramblings, I like to think that the pretty flowers have at least put a smile in your day. Kim

  21. I am amused to see the outdoor photo of balance laptop and cup of tea as you snap the photo. I don't know if I'd be so daring. :-) American politics: every day I read something so unreal it can't be true... and yet it is. I am relatively isolated, so I spend a lot of time wondering how we got here as a nation. So much anger... and often not on the injustices that one should be angry about. I can only imagine what it looks like from the outside. It's going to be a rough winter.

So your lovely spring colors and amazing clamshell sewing is a much needed uplift in my day!

  27. Hello Kim,
Life is slowly returning back to a different type of normal up here on the south coast of NSW. I wonder what this summer will bring. I still have moment of slight panic if I smell smoke, however that is to be expected I guess. I am enjoying my stitching and I am having fun collecting a few pretty fabrics, especially those gorgeous liberty’s. Your colours in your blog just make me want to cut and stitch. Such an abundance of prettiness. We have planted lots of flowers in this place we are living for the time being. Foxgloves here are thriving also. Again I must say it’s an absolute joy when your post shows up in my inbox 📨 and I often don’t open it until I have time to really sit and enjoy it unhurriedly. This year for many has will be one we will enjoy putting to rest at the end of December and we will all have a lovely fresh start in the New Year, God willing.
Thank you again for your willingness to share the beauty of your garden, your stitching and indeed parts of your life.
    Blessings Gail.

    1. Hello Gail,
I have often wondered how you were since you popped by earlier in the year. It's that time of the year again, when the fire season can reap havoc all over Australia. The wildfires in California and other parts of America have been catastrophic this year. Every year they seem to be worse than the previous year. Yes, you would be feeling nervous and quite rightly so. Hopefully, all will be well and you will be able to rest easy. It's lovely to hear that you are beginning to enjoy your stitching again and that some pretty Liberty fabrics are finding their way into your stash. I would love to see what you are stitching....perhaps you could email me. I would imagine living on the south coast of NSW is conducive to gardening and pretty flowers. I am delighted that foxgloves are flourishing there. They are such happy flowers, aren't they. I have a friend who I have been friends with all my life, who lives in Kangaroo Valley and I have many beautiful memories of holidaying there in her beautiful home. She almost lost her home last summer. The south coast of NSW is a paradisiacal part of the world. 2020....what can we say....except to say it has been a difficult year and for some whose families have lost loved ones, tragic. Then of course there are those such as yourself and your family who have lost your home and everything you own to catastrophic bushfires. Devastating! Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could could put it all to rest by January 1st, but I am thinking we will be living with COVID for a while yet. Great news though, that there are inroads re the vaccine. There is always such hope and anticipation at the beginning of the year. Hopefully 2021 will be better than 2020. Re your comments about visiting my little place. You have no idea how your thoughts have warmed my day....they truly have. Sometimes blogging can be hard work. Mostly writing is the easiest thing for me, but there are other times when there is not a single idea....my fog-like brainpan just won't get into gear and the words escape me. I am grasping; but then, the fog clears and I am on my bumbling way again. The photos too, can sometimes take a long time, so when someone such as you tells me that you feel "absolute joy when a post of mine shows in your inbox", then it is all worth it, isn't it. All I want to do really, is sprinkle a little beauty to another's day. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. =) So here's to more posts overspilling with pretty flowers, pretty quilts and other such nonsense. Thank you for your beautiful visit, dear Gail. Keep well and please take care. May you enjoy your week, happily stitching away with those gorgeous Liberty fabrics. Kim Xx

    1. Hello Betty, a lovely welcome to my little place. A clamshell quilt seems to be on a lot of people's 'to do' list. The size of each clamshell is 4 1/4" from left bottom corner to the right bottom corner. The size of my QAYG hexies are 4 1/2" for the smaller hexie and I think from memory 6" for the backing hexie. How wonderful you are making a QAYG hexagon quilt. They are my very favourite quilts to fashion. How delightful you visit my blog regularly....thank you so much. Hoping you enjoy a lovely week. American politics is bizarre even to Americans such as myself. There seems to be a contingent of the Republican Party - Trump’s party - that no long holds with the ideals of democracy, preferring to keep power no matter the cost. It is a huge problem. This preceded Trump. He is a symptom rather than the cause.

Oh your new quilt is just gorgeous, I have not tried one of those quilts, it looks like it may be a bit over my ability, can't wait to see it all done.
I am saddened by the amount of people that have had this covid and those that fought hard but didn't make it, so many have gotten it and have recovered that I think others aren't being as cautious because they don't feel they will get it bad, but they have to think of how it will affect others not just themselves. I have a feeling this will be a long winter, especially if everything goes into lock down again and all people can do is go grocery shopping. Well enough negativity.... I hope you enjoyed a lovely and relaxing Sunday stitching away!!

    1. How so, Loes?? Do you mean my little political observation written in my post, or, the comments written by some? I suppose each of us votes for the party we want for many varying reasons and some let us know in a most ardent and fervent manner, why they have done so. Perhaps some could have been better expressed in a kinder tone, but I have no control over what people say. I suppose as author of this blog I could veto those comments, but it doesn’t sit well with me sending them off to the spam folder or indeed obliterating these comments just because we are polar opposites. Though my little blog waxes lyrical about all things pretty; pretty flowers and pretty pretties which I imagine and then fashion, and other such fripperies and frivolous nonsense; sometimes…..just sometimes my toes do tend to step over to the other side, the dark side, and linger a while where subjects such as political and other social issues are thought and spoken about. Then, to my horror, I shriek “what on earth have I done??!!” and quickly step back into my happy place once again (phew) where dastardly topics such as foreign affairs, political back room dealings and the like are smothered by bouquet after bouquet of pretty flowers; and stuff and nonsense reigns supreme yet again. Who would have thunk it, that my little political observation of duplicitous stratagem in the hushed corridors of power could have thrown the cat amongst the pigeons?? =) Has the political tone harmed my little blog forevermore?? Perhaps......perhaps not. This little post has been an insight to me, though. As for me, I am off to enjoy a cup of ambrosial tea in the prettiest of teacups and push those thoughts of political gamesmanship (hmmm…..) to the dark recesses of my brainpan and think upon pretty things…….because…..well….it is a shallow gal that I am. Why, isn’t a cup of tea the panacea for all ills?? Me thinks so. With hand on my heart I hereby promise that when next I post, transmission will be back to normal. =)

It is always a delight to have you visit my mostly flowery little world. Your visits are delightful♡ Hoping you are enjoying a beautiful week, and, lovely Loes, please do keep well and take care. Kim Xx

    2. Oh no, dear Kim, I didn't mean your little political comment, but that some of them are reacting so fiercely and compellingly and that's not part of your flowery blog.
For example, I was very annoyed by the praise of Trump that he would be so very good, and so on. Now, if I were an American, I would really be ashamed of such a narcissistic, selfish, superior, and misogynistic man as president, and he is also deeply unsportsmanlike about not wanting to know his loss. What does he want? start a civil war or something?
But enough now, let's keep it friendly, I want to enjoy your beautiful atmospheric garden and your awesome quilts.
      Dear greetings,
      Loes

    3. Dearest Loes, I was 99.9 percent certain that you couldn't possibly mean my little comment, but I wasn't sure. Sometimes the written word can be misinterpreted as we cannot see the visuals of the other person's facial expressions, the intonation of their voice etc. I don't understand why we cannot talk about politics in a civilised manner, each respecting the other's points of view, but I suppose there will always be some who will rant. Yes, best to keep it friendly, lovely Loes. =)

Wouldn't it be wonderful if you and I could sit awhile here, in my garden and just enjoy each other's company. We would enjoy a spot of tea and you must, must bring one of those delectable cakes of yours. Of course, you would also have to bring a suitcase, too, filled with all your beautiful handiwork so I could see each in person, as I am always struck by the variety of your work you have fashioned over the years. Then when I have finished looking at each exquisite pretty we could go into the kitchen and you could show me how to bake and decorate, a delectable cake, as only you can do. Wouldn't that be the best fun, for I consider you and I to be kindred spirits.

Thank you, dear Loes for popping by again. I hope you are enjoying a beautiful week in your lovely corner of the world. Kim Xx

Then I so agree with what you write about the election in the United States. I think we are a whole world wondering if they still want Trump as president. There must be something we did not understand. At least I'm glad Joe Biden won, so it's going to be exciting to look forward.

  42. Beautiful spring in the Southern Hemisphere.....perhaps another consolation to this worldwide pandemic, as our fall has been a beautiful show as well.

  43. Dear Kim, Your post is a most welcome sight! Those snaps of your lovely flowers make me so happy! I can almost smell the lovely scent of the lilacs!! Believe it or not, my little lilac bush bloomed briefly this fall. I don't remember it doing so before but we had a nice, mild fall so I suppose it felt inspired. Thank you for your kind thoughts and prayers during these last several weeks. I am so glad we are turn the political page in our country and the news of several vaccines to fight this awful disease is very uplifting! I've been 'baching' it this week as J and our son have joined two others on a hunting and fishing trip to Alaska. They have had a ball and will return tomorrow. I've been busy with some cleaning projects, a little decorating for the holidays and working on a little quilt for Jack. I'll share it in next week's post. It's nothing as lovely as your new creation but one I hope he enjoys! Wishing you a beautiful, happy and healthy week! Zenda

  44. Thank you, Dear Kim for the lovely balm of your beautiful post filled with flowers, quilting, and soothing words. I can imagine myself strolling through your garden, perhaps with a cup of tea, arm and arm and chatting about life. The swan vases caught my fancy, with the needlework to match. The foxglove and iris and wonderful columbine are truly like a fairy garden and those lilac bouquets - oh, they must smell divine! Thank you for the sympathy for our poor, ravaged country. It is like being in an abusive marriage and not being able to leave because of the kids.....I have been in mourning for 4 years. It is always nice to know we might still have friends left in this world. Always love to come and visit - a true breath of fresh, spring air. Sending hugs xo Karen

  45. Another gorgeous quilt in the makings amid your delightful scenery. You inspire us all with your beautiful garden, flowers and surroundings, letting us forget for a while the world´s problems and worries. As I write this an ambulance has screeched past with yet another coronavirus patient being taken to a collapsed hospital. Stay safe in your peaceful part of the world and keep cheering us with your wonderful sewing.

  47. Stunningly beautiful garden, Kim. I love foxgloves; they are magical.
I quite agree about smiles, kindness, respect and love. I believe that kindness changes everything. And a day spent in, say your garden, with all that beauty would, I believe, change a negative to an extreme positive.
I love the clamshell quilt. Thank you for sharing so much beauty.

  48. Kim - as always, I thoroughly enjoyed your post. I have recently learned that columbines are called granny bonnets in your part of the world, and my hubby and I have decided we like that name better! Your flowers are magnificent - I especially liked the picture of Maisie among the foxgloves.

I appreciate the distraction from US politics. I am firmly on the Biden side of things, and it continues to be amazing that over 70 million people see it SO differently. But they think the same thing about ME! I am forever optimistic that we can find a way forward that heals these divides.

  50. Oh,those magnificent lilacs! I can almost smell them (altho' I guess, with my allergies, that's not such a good thing....but that's not to say I don't WANT to!). And hand stitched clamshells - another piece of art will come from your clever fingers I think.
And I won't get into the fracas over politics - suffice to say I hope cooler heads prevail.

  52. Here in Tokyo, those foxgloves bloom during late summer and they are not so tall. They are called "hotatrubukuro" which means firefly bags.I love all your pictures. Here among the foreign community almost everyone is horrified at trump's antics. I try to stay out of political discussions as much as possible, but even the little kids I work with know polite ways to treat others.
