A Sweet Sunday Finish❣

A lovely hello from my little wintry world❣ 'Tis Sunday morning yet again.  It is a chilly, wintry kinda morning here, with a biting nip to the air. Old Man Sun has not made an appearance for days. Where oh where is he?? How I miss the radiant magic of his cheerful beams. Day after day of impenetrable, threatening clouds and drizzles of rain have been the order of my little world. I could've, would've, should've jumped out of bed to behold the magic waiting outside of the early mornings, during this last little while. I just know that God's masterful handiwork would have been a sight to behold........oh well. If only my hand stitched, hand quilted, squishy squashy quilts that bundle me up during the night would relinquish their cuddly and snug grasp, then I would jump crawl (never in my life have I ever, ever jumped out of bed) from my oh-so-warm-and-comfy place of slumber.  Then of course, when indeed I do finally throw off peel the bed covers, layer by layer, from my quiescent frame and arise, there is the cosy fire and a warm cuppa which entice me to linger in the warmth of my humble abode. Who am I to ignore these creature comforts. I don't seem to want to stick my nose out in the early morning, glacial air, where as far as the naked eye can see, ice-sheathed paddocks sit shrouded in mist.

Even Maisie who relishes her early morning walks, has been loathe to greet the morning  with her customary ecstatic wag of her tail and a smile on her face. For some reason she is a little tardy coming out of  her kennel.  Mind you, I am quite certain if she sees me with her leash in hand her excitement will abound. Perhaps the two of us are just feeling a little aged these days. Winter can do that to me. =) I hope the two of us find our zeal and vigour for traipsing over the countryside soon, as I do love (well I did last winter) to capture, through the lens of my camera, those wondrous moments that wintry, early mornings gift.

Spending more time than I normally would inside has induced me to stitch my Sweet Sunday quilt until the final stitch has been stitched. Yes indeedy, the hand quilting is done and the binding is dancing around the edge. AND.....even if I do say so, I am loving it. I am loving the hand quilted texture to it and the fabulous soft, tactile essence of the Liberty fabrics. Those of you who have stitched with Liberty Tana Lawn fabrics will know exactly what I mean. For the binding I used leftover Liberty fabric to make strips, stitching them together for a patched effect. Oh.........and just because I could, I gussied up some pillowcases to sit merrily with my little quilt. I don't normally do matchy, matchy but in this instance, well, I could not help myself. Just one of those spur-of-the-moment, kinda things. I must say, they do look rather fab........but that's just me. =) Mmm....I could get used to this matchy, matchy phenomenon.

Sweet Sunday was a joy to stitch. Every facet of this quilt was a delight; from the playing with gorgeous Liberty fabrics and vintage embroidered linens, the hand piecing of each triangle and diamond together to form my favourite shape, the hexie; to the hand quilting, and the hand stitching of the binding. It is a pattern designed by Emma Di Stefano of Treehouse Textiles, but I didn't follow the pattern. I wandered off the patterned path and explored other possibilities and delightful discoveries. The slow meditative essence this quilt bestowed to my days spent in my humble abode, during the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown was akin to many warm hugs. When I look at and touch this quilt I will remember this pretty as being the one fashioned during a most bizarre time in our world's history.......which is still being played out in every country of the world. It seems to me, with each new day there is a new situation that is demanding our attention, our immediate consideration; injustices which need to begin to be put right.

Whilst hand stitching this quilt from start to finish, the rythmic  and repetitive steps of stitching have stilled my thoughts and calmed my mind; helping me to think upon positive things during these disturbing times. This is what slow hand stitching does, doesn't it, it quietens those troubled thoughts that persist in seeping into the consciousness, which can sometimes bring a dark cloud to one's day. With needle and thread, stitching each little stitch, in...out; one just breathes, inhaling...exhaling; pausing; I suppose reflecting upon anything and everything; with hand, mind and imagination harmoniously working together to create something of beauty, something of intrinsic value to each person who joys in the pleasure of hand stitching. It never ceases to amaze me just how therapeutic slow hand stitching is. Many a time throughout the stitching of these gorgeous Liberty fabrics and happy hexies, I often smiled, wondering how disquieting thoughts could possibly persist when playing with Liberty Tana Lawn, vintage embroideries and hexies....as they are always the perfect pick-me-up.

So.....another queen size quilt, completely hand stitched, is finished. Another quilt with so many thoughts, reflections and memories whirling around it. My first quilt fashioned from Liberty Tana Lawn and I am quite certain will not be my last. I do believe with the exquisite silken touch, the gorgeous colour palette and beautiful patterns, these iconic fabrics will once again stealthily find their way into my humble abode.

Down here at the bottom of the world the doors of our homes have creaked open and we are allowed to once again amble through the countryside whenever we desire. Once again we are able to go to a city park and play 'photo-shoot' and walk and skip over carpets of  crispy leaves which scrunch underfoot. Oh, how wonderful it is to walk among ancient trees whose appearance are worthy of a J.R.R.Tolkein tale. Why, I do believe we might have stumbled upon a relative of Tolkien's Treebeard. Do you know what, I think 'he' might have winked at me. Oh, 'tis good to have fun with a photo shoot and entertain passers-by as they smile at my husband's, and my antics. My husband is an hysterical fellow who is always up for a merry photo-taking outing.  Photo shoots can induce much merriment. Yep, our days are beginning to sleepily arise from all things lockdown. We, on this little island, are once again allowed to twirl and whirl in a merry dance with our friends.

Thank you lovely lovelies for popping by this wintry morning and gifting me with your sweet visit. As always each one of you has beamed sunshine and cheeriness to my  wintry day♥ Now, if only Old Man Sun could beam some rays of sunshine through those clouds and warm dem ol' bones of mine. I wonder if........and when he will??

Until the next time.......................

  4. Hello Kim, I really think I could live down there on beautiful Tasmania. We visited 2 years ago and I’d love to come back. So much beauty to gaze at. Your quilt is beautiful. I too, love liberty tana lawn. Sadly I lost all my liberty fabric on New Years Eve when those horrendous bushfires on the south coast claimed our home and all our belongings. I have begun stitching again and have started to replenish my stash of fabric. I think we are about the same era as you and your sweet husband. I will enjoy making new memories and after seeing your quilt I think I need to make something similar, but perhaps just a throw for the settee in my little sewing room. We bought a little home as I could not face building again and are settling in well. Thank you for your lovely blog, I get excited when I see it come into my inbox.
    Blessings Gail.

    1. Hello Gail, I cannot imagine the heartache and stress you have suffered at the loss of your home and all your belongings through the bushfires. What a horrendous year 2020 has been for you and your family. To read that you have bought a new little home and are settling in well; a home where you will enjoy stitching new pretties and make new memories is a most wondrous thing. Your story has blessed my heart today, Gail and made my soul smile with your beautiful thoughts. If you do indeed visit Tasmania again, then you must visit us as I think you and I would find so many things to chat about. I was wondering, would it be possible for you to email me your address?? I would like to pop a few things in the post for you. If not, then that is perfectly okay. Yes, a little hand pieced, hexie throw would be perfect for the settee in your little sewing room. I am humbled that you love to visit my little place each time. You lovely lady, have sprinkled much beauty into my day. Thank you♥ Kim Xx

  5. What a beautiful quilt! It must be so satisfying to have it finished. I love the Liberty fabric. And hubby's photoshoot made me smile! I love hand quilting, even though it takes much longer. It is worth it as the process is just as important as the end result. Enjoy snuggling with your new quilt!

    1. I feel wonderful that this little pretty is finished, Jayne. The whole process was such a satisfying experience. Though I love quilts that are beautifully machine quilted, I much prefer the texture and softness of a hand quilted quilt. Hand quilting does seem to take forever, but somehow it is more gratifying than sending it off to the long arm quilter. I could look at this quilt for a very long time and just drink in all the pretty fabrics and vintage embroideries. I totally agree that the process is just as important, if not more, as the end result. Thank you for popping by, Jayne. Kim Xx

I too, hope that sunshine will beam smiles in this little neck of the woods soon.....though as I look at the forecast, it will be a few days yet. I hope you, lovely lady, are enjoying the warmth of your summer. Thank you for your sunny thoughts. =) Kim Xx

  7. So, so beautiful! The quilt of course. DH is a handsome chap though. We've been lucky to have sun with our cold days and even a little rain to refresh the air and give the thirsty garden a much needed drink.

  10. Good morning Kim! Just like Gail, I get excited to see your post in my feed and wonder what captivating glimpse of your amazing world you'll show us!
You've created a most delightful quilt - I cannot emphasize it enough how much I admire your designing and quilting skills. I fell in love with the pillows too! In fact, I am quite taken with your whole room! It radiates with love, warmth and coziness and it is a true source of inspiration! Wishing you a lovely Sunday!

  12. Sweet Sunday is so beautiful! The hexie border is amazing, love it! You make me want to start another hexie project but I become frustrated when I have too many projects going at a time. I completely understand about missing the sun in winter. I am so enjoying our summer sunshine and warmth. It seems like it took forever to arrive this year. After the evening barn chores, I've been reading on the porch, enjoying the long evenings of sunshine, winter will come too soon. Happy stitching, I'm sure you'll be inspired to start another project.

  13. A beautiful finish to a beautiful hand stitched project. Pieced binding adds interest to a quilt - good choice. Sweet Sunday is perfect on your bed as if it's lived there all along. Nicely coordinated pillow cases/covers I might add. Photo shoot is wonderful despite signs of winter clothing and leaves on the ground. That would be fall for northern parts of North America. Everything is better when the sun is shining. Uplifting news that Tasmania residents can move about more freely. What charming project is next on Kim's list of hand stitched lovelies... or must we wait a week or two

  14. Your quilt finished beautifully. The edge finish is perfect for it and the little flowers look so pretty. The pillow treatment is fabulous too. Well done Kim!

  15. The pillowcases are such a lovely touch to your sweet quilt. I'd forgotten how you'd added those hexies to the edge of the quilt border and had to go back and see that, yes, they were definitely there. I can tell that you enjoyed your photo shot in the park. What a wonderful old tree - I could almost see a face in the trunk. We are opening up a bit more around here, too. I feel rather like I'm walking on egg shells though. Will the virus rear it's ugly head again soon. Praying for a vaccine...I think it may be our only salvation.

  16. What a lovely celebration post with beautiful photographs... your finished quilt is gorgeous! A photo shoot is an invitation to enjoy a creative interaction between the environment and the quilt, and it looks like you really enjoyed the experience.
I love love love the scrappy binding and the pillowcases to match are so pretty too! I have some small squares of Liberty fabric and have been thinking about what to make with them. They definitely are the smoothest fabrics I have ever touched!
Thanks for linking up to Slow Sunday Stitching!

  18. Wow, Kim. It is a beauty indeed! I've never bought Liberty fabrics but so adore them. I did however, just purchase online a blouse made of Liberty cloth so I will be wearing it. This is the most wonderful quarantined project and all sewn by hand. Very special!

  19. While you are shivering in the depths of your winter, we are reaching the height of our summer with temperatures soaring and no rain in sight. My poor gardens are stressed and I find the heat effects me more each passing year. Your Liberty lawn hexie quilt is truly a delight and it's nice to see your accommodating and handsome model again. Our little corner of the world is slowly opening up although we are staying close to home and still limiting our exposure. Other parts of the US are still seeing increased cases and the attitude that the whole pandemic is a hoax is very distressing. Thanks for bringing some cheeriness into my restricted world.

  23. What a feast for my eyes! It's luscious and beautiful, Kim. I love the old-fashioned touch of edging the pillowcases too.

We are finding much of the US spiking again with COVID numbers, likely due to vacationers, protesters and just plain idiots, in general. We're still guardedly moving about, but mostly keeping our circle of contact very limited. Stay well, my friend. Winter's garden enough without illness.

    1. Rita, I have seen on the news the COVID numbers in the US just keep rising. I suppose it has to happen with so many people out on the streets and in confined spaces practising no social distancing nor wearing masks. As you say, idiocy. We are lucky here in Tassie as we are a small island and our Premier is at the stage of not allowing people to enter. At the moment we have been weeks without any reported cases of COVID. At this stage we have been very fortunate. Our little state has experienced very good leadership. You keep well and safe as you move around that petrie dish over there. Keeping your circles of contact very limited is the way to avoid this disease. Take care. Kim Xx

  35. Are you sure it's Winter where you are? Because anywhere that Sweet Sunday quilt is, is most assuredly a blessed Spring! Oh my word, to think this started as Liberty hankies turned into hexies (my new quilty love), then added fussy cuts from vintage embroidered hankies, embroidered borders and the pillowcases -- I squealed in delight at the sight of them! Love that all the hand work resulted in a soft, gentle and beautiful finish and photo shoot. May the two of you snuggle down contentedly under it for years to come. Thank you for sharing this one which blocks out all the COVID dreariness!

I am so happy my little quilt has caused some of that dreariness to dissipate...if only a little. =) Thank you for popping by. I hope you are well and quilting up a storm way up there. Kim Xx

Yes, it was done completed during this difficult time in our history but its cheery colors and beautiful pattern mirrors resilience and hope by reminding us of Spring’s renewal. I’m glad the restrictions are easing a bit but know this nasty virus isn’t quite finished. Slow and steady if the prudent choice. Wishing you a warm and cozy week, dear Kim! You have oodles of bright and beautiful quilts to keep you warm and happy through the winter and, if I know you, there’s a new one on the horizon! 😉

  40. What a lovely finish! I love the borders and even the pillow cases. Liberty fabric is the most expensive here in local shops. I found a small box of some among the florals I was "gifted" with. Not enough for something as big as a bed cover but may have possibilities. It should be easier to quilt than the feed sacks. Thanks for this lovely post of eye candy.(with no calories either).
