Showy, Flirty Dahlias

A lovely welcome to all you lovely, lovelies♥

This week there has been a flush of Dahlias blooming in the garden. It is as if they have en masse, banded together to bring the last carnival of vivid, intense colour and delight to those who gaze upon them. It is the Dahlias' last hurrah for the year.  Dahlias are extroverts.  They are flamboyant and indeed, shrinking violets they are not. Dahlias are showy, flirty  pretties with  petals of frilly concoctions which rather remind me of a ballerina's tutu.

Gazing upon Dahlias, in my mind's eye I can see the dressing rooms of a theatre, where tutus hang on special hangers waiting to be worn for the final ballet performance. I can almost hear the buzzing excitement and nervous chatter of the principal dancers, the ballerinas, the danseurs; all applying the final touches to their makeup, perhaps catching those wispy strands of hair and tucking them into their coiffured buns. There are dressers tut tutting as they help each dancer quickly change into their costumes between each act. There is not a minute to spare! Aah yes.....I can catch a glimpse of the corps de ballet dressed in frilly, multi-layered, dahlia-like tutus twirling and twirling....and pirouetting across the stage.

And....as these pretties will soon be nipped by Jack Frost's icy fingers, I had to....just had to play and have some fun with these pretties, and a pretty fabric or two.

Yellows to peachy apricots to bright oranges.

Vibrant reds ranging from single flowers to magnificent full blown, dinner plate size, pretties.

Bright pinks.....pastel pinks.....glorious in between pinks.

Would you believe there are sixteen types of Dahlias. There are decorative singles or cactus types with pointy petals. Ones with peony-shaped flowers, spherical ball and pompoms to anemones, fimbriated ones with split ends to the petals and large flat collarettes. It seems to me that I will need to go in search of some of the Dahlias that we do not have growing in our garden. Me thinks a little flower catalogue browsing and shopping is going to be enjoyed throughout the coming winter.

Sending all you lovelies a little Dahlia LOVE from my little autumnal place. As always it is a delight to have you visit...thank you. Perhaps next time when you pop in there will be some stitching to show you. =) But for now, I am thinking I just might go in search of my dahlia-like tutu, slip on my pointe shoes and pirouette tippy toed, through my weekend.

May you all enjoy a most beautiful weekend♥ Until the next time......

  4. Those are really stunning and it's a great way to see the show end for the year. I love the dahlias too. They make such great cut flowers for the vases. I love the choice of fabrics you have selected to show with the dahlias.

  7. I love dahlias! You have a beautiful collection in your garden. I am planting my tubers this weekend, indoors. They can't stay out over winter here, it is too cold and wet and generally miserable.

  16. What gorgeous showy dahlias! Showy they are and they are forgiven for this self-confidence because they really are the stars of autumn gardens. The nice bouquets you have made with them create a unique texture, we feel like stroking their soft petals as if they were "froufrous"! I wish you a nice autumnal weekend, Kim! Hugs from France!

  19. gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous...the dahlias are just so pretty. a flower with so much going on, so much detail!!! i really love them but can't seem to find a spot in my gardens where they look really good and can also be staked. i had so many, years ago but they just didn't "flow" right in the garden i had them in. i pulled them out and gave them to my neighbor. i still visit them!!!

you have such a beautiful way of describing things. i do adore them all but those dark pinks and purples really stole my heart, just like a sweet ballerina or tiny dancer!!!

  21. :) Your dahlias are extravagantly gorgeous though I would never have thought of ballet in the same breath!!!! YOU are extravagant, too. Here we need to dig our dahlia bulbs up in the fall and replant them in the spring because they don't winter over with our extended coldness. Can you just leave them in the ground?

  22. What is there not to love about dahlias and about this post? My grandmother loved dahlias, so I always think of her when I see them. She was always eager to take her vistors into her garden to admire them. It is just one of my happy memories.

    1. I guess the overload of beautiful Dahlias is because very soon Jack Frost will arrive and these tutu-like pretties will be reduced to burnt blackness and will be no more. You know the thing I dislike most about Winter is the ice sheathed garden where there is no colour or pretty flowers to make me smile. Oh, there is beauty in the bare sculptural trees and the beautiful misty landscape, but what I miss most is the continuing parade of colourful flowers. During the long months of Winter I always think.....what on earth will I chat about. =) I know I shouldn't but I count down the months, the weeks, the days till I see those first bulbs, the Daffodils raise their pretty heads. Then I know Spring is on it's way, yet again. I wonder if one day I will ever love Winter?? Thank you for your sweet visit, lovely Elizabeth. I must pop over and visit Kate and her Dahlias. Kim Xx

  25. I am enjoying seeing what you see, on the other side of the world, and seeing the difference in spelling of things... for us in the USA, the word is DANCING, however you have lots more letters in your word. I watch a lot of BBC on the tv, and find it interesting the changes of word meanings I find there too. Have a beautiful time twirling in your beautiful dahlias!

    1. Hello Jean, It is lovely to have you visit...thank you♥ Aah yes...the vagary of language from around the world. Here in Australia our spelling and grammar is closely aligned to the British English. I sometimes think that those of you who live in the USA would sometimes not have a clue as to what I am saying. I sometimes think you up there would think I am a dreadful speller, but we down here spell quite a few words differently.=) Did you mean the word "danseur" which I referred to in my post? This term is a male ballet dancer. This is one of the great things about blogging, I become familiar with so many different terms and idioms from many countries in the world, and learn many new things. One of these days I will say something that is probably a bit naughty without realising it. =) I spent quite a bit of my weekend twirling and pirouetting among my pretty Dahlias. They will be gone soon, so I have to make the most of these gorgeous pretties. I hope you have a beautiful week, lovely lady. Kim Xx

  26. Beautiful, beautiful blooms, Kim. Many moons ago I had dahlias in my garden, and loved them. Somewhere along the line they died. I think it's time to get some more.

  29. You have made magnificent photos of the beautiful dahlias. I used to come to a woman who also had a lot of dahlias, she made exceptional flower arrangements out of it, just like you do.
She had "green fingers" as they say with us.
I didn't know there were so many lovely varieties!

    1. Neither did I, Loes. Come next Spring I will be adding a few more varieties of Dahlias to the garden. I have spent the day planting 100's of Dutch Irises in readiness for Spring. Got to get through Winter first, though. Re your sweet comment re flower arranging....it is easy when one has gorgeous blooms and pretty fabrics. One just throws the two together. =) Hope you enjoy a beautiful week, dear Loes. I am supposing you will be whipping up a storm in that magical kitchen of yours. Kim Xx

  30. Kim, oh the dance of the Dahlias is such a delightful one. Those dahlia tutus all rustling and swaying as if the wind was orchestrating the ballet. Simple beautiful! I mailed your package last week and I hope that it arrives in a timely fashion. For some reason, the Post Office said that I couldn't get tracking on the package so I pray it does arrive safe and sound! xo

    1. You see the ballet of the Dahlias, too, don't you Gina. =) I love what you said "rustling and swaying as if the wind was orchestrating the ballet"....just lyrically beautiful. Thank you for posting 'my' little package. How odd that you could not have a tracking number. I posted a parcel to New York this morning and I was able to track it. Anyway.....I am sure it will turn up....so very excited. Thank you for your beautiful visit, dear Gina. Kim Xx

  31. Oh, I just love your Dahlia's! They are magical. I have never grown them but now I want to try. I just love Zinnia's too so maybe a mix in my south facing garden? What are some of the varieties you do have in your garden? I am awful at knowing what to buy. I have to wait till the end of May to plant here so I have a month to figure it all out! Such a lovely post with the pretty flowers and fabrics. I hope you had a wonderful weekend!

  32. I am not sure why this post of your was late in my feed, but happy I saw it! Dahlias, such beautiful, luxurious flowers. Rich in colors and appearance. The petals appear silken at the top and velvet at the bottom thus giving the sense of richness in texture too!
    Amazing photos!

  33. Oh I do love me some dahlias! I had a couple of beauties on some pots last year that I rescued from the "got-all-dried-up-and-ugly" rack at one of the local nurseries. You have SO MANY lovely varieties...they are STUNNING! Savor that gorgeousness as long as Jack Frost will allow...it's hard to believe it is already autumn for you! Thanks for sharing all of this loveliness, dear Kim! Sweet hugs to you!

  34. Kim - you do know how blessed you are, right? I am absolutely delirious from absorbing the colors and textures of your post, from the flowers to the fabrics. And you want to add MORE dahlia varieties to your garden??? Your garden is a fabulous example of the outcome of hard work and investment. I can only hope that my landscape is as fabulous in years to come!

  35. Dahlias are one of my favourites, they ALWAYS remind me of my grandmother. She used to have oodles of dahlias in her garden. I love all colours, but the warm tones cheers me up immensely. I loved seeing your jewel tone bouquet in the sweet green glass jar :)

  42. Your dahlias are really beautiful! Strangely enough we were going to grow dahlias this year for the first time! DH was given some roots by our neighbour, but now we aren’t sure they will grow as we have now been told they were grown from seed the previous year and probably won’t grow very well! Now, what to do!
    Your pictures are gorgeous!
