Spring Blossoms.....A Spring Finish

It is always a joyful feeling when a quilt one has been working on for a long time is finished. And......with the last stitch stitched on my Spring Blossoms pretty, I am beside myself with great joy! In my sewing room this past week, time has been ticking away as I finished the hand quilting and stitched the scrappy fabric binding to the quilt.

Spring blossoms is resting on the bed in the boudoir, singing a sweet Spring song, which is apt as there is just a whiff that Spring is perhaps not too far away. There is just a hint that Spring will soon be 'bustin out all over' down here. Well.....that is at least in the botanical form....it is still a wee bit chilly for my liking. Those first pretties of Spring, all things Narcissus are popping their frilly, petticoat hoop faces up from the chilly earth to greet me with a smile. I must admit when I gaze upon these sunshine-filled blooms oozing with happiness I cannot help but smile. 'Tis beginning to look rather pretty down here.

I started Spring Blossoms about this time last year. I had fallen giddy in love with stitching EPP hexies and as I stitched each flower I imagined how pretty a quilt would look with blocks of hexie flowers  in a scrappy quilt. So.....Spring Blossoms was born.

Remember these??

Each of these hexie flowers and blocks have as if by magic blossomed into a pretty spring-like quilt.

A simple quilt both in design and stitching. No PHD required here for the stitching of this pretty. The hand quilting too, was simple, just quilting around each block and the flowers. I suppose one of these days I will send one of my quilts off to a long arm quilting connoisseur, but if truth be told, I love the look and feel of a hand quilted quilt. Yes my stitches are not even in length and yes my stitches do tend to wander off the straight and narrow path but I love the soft, squishy-squashyness feel of a hand quilted quilt; something which a quilt loses when quilted within an inch of its life on one of those long arm machines. Oh, the patterns on these machines are amazingly beautiful and may I say perfect (something which I should wax lyrical about seeing as I am a tad persnickety) but somehow I am rather partial to a hand quilted pretty. I will always love the perfect imperfections of hand quilting. Besides, I find hand quilting rather therapeutic, I really, really do.....even if it seems to take forever to finish.

Another scrappy quilt to add to the collection.

There is just something about quilts that dance with scrappylicious colour and pattern and charm, isn't there. I love my Spring Blossoms quilt. It oozes with two of my favourite things in quilting....hexagons and scrappy fabrics. Will this be my last scrappy quilt?? Somehow, I don't think so.

Until the next time.........

  9. Your quilt is beautiful. AND UNIQUE. I just love all the soft colors though I admit that I am partial usually to jewel tones. I'm going to look back through your blog to see if I can find the quilt in your stack that has the larger hexies with the self boarder. I want to try that!!

  13. Hello friend!! Oh how very much I love this finish!!! I have a pile of finished hexagon flowers that the pattern called for them to be all sewn together in rows...but I love your idea so much better, especially because I have so much fabric left over. THANK YOU for the inspiration!!Looking forward to see what you begin next. :) :) Try to keep warm. Smiles being sent your way.

  14. I was so pleased to see your posting; I had been thinking it had been awhile. Plus one of the last postings I delayed to read until the next day and :( it was no longer available when I chose the time to read it. I just love hand stitching and EPP. Those blooms are gorgeous - your scrappiness always looks so well thought and planned out. I've only done a tiny bit of hand quilting and finally ordered a special hand quilting hoop. I'm waiting for it to arrive and can not wait until I can begin 'learning'. We'll see how that goes. In the meantime, I've been working on a BOM Patchwork of the Crosses. We get the fabric for 3 blocks to sew; it's in reproduction feedsacks and 30s fabrics. As ever, Kim, your projects are the best.

  16. Oh wow Kim that is just stunning, I do know that feeling of finishing after such a long time, and it is just wonderful. I still have not made a Hexie quilt and would love to one day, and yes there is nothing like hand quilting, I like the look better when the stitches aren't perfect myself, good thing since mine are never perfect. All your pictures are just lovely of it but how special to have it on your bed!
There is truly nothing as special as spring time when all the earth seems to come alive :)

  19. Kim - all your hours of stitching have yielded a treasure for the ages. Scrappylicious is one of the words you used? Very appropriate. And I like how you had your 'model' posing in the garden with other posies - the daffodils. Gorgeous! Congratulations on wrapping up another delightful-to-the-eye project!

  20. Oh MY! Dear Kim .. how very beautiful indeed! How do you ever sleep in that beautiful room with so many pretties? I would just lie there looking & touching all those gorgeous fabrics & lovely things. You have done a stunning job of it ... & those daffodils! Are they at your place? Just beautiful. It is raining sideways here today & hard to imagine that it is the third day of spring.

You've poured so much time and love into it. I think that's what makes quilts so special is all the love that goes into them. You make beautiful things Kim. You are a real artist and inspiration. Blessings to you sweet friend. ♥

Yes I agree, there is nothing like handquilting and I too find it very soothing and therapeutic - I just wish there were more hours in the day or even a extra day in the week! xx

  39. Just gorgeous! I am so glad I checked my sidebar for your new post. For some reason I have not been getting email notifications for new posts from bloggers I follow. It is really annoying! But now I am happy to have seen this post with the prettiest floral quilt and just in time for Spring to arrive for you. We are anxiously awaiting the cooler weather because it has been SO hot here. I wish Spring warmth for you and cool Fall days for me!

  41. Oh my gosh Kim, it is gorgeous! And to think you are saying it was an easy quilt. :) I adore hand quilting, but if I waited to do that on mine they would never get done. I love the imperfect look and sending them out is getting so expensive. I've really slowed down. Working on a baby quilt for a new great grand. Oh my, what a surprise hubby found out on our porch last night. A special package from you all the way from down under. My pillow, (cushion) is absolutely sheer delight! I love the fact that you created each and every one of those posies!! The colors are perfect and I will cherish it forever. I am feeling quite bad that it cost so much to ship it. I really would like to send you some money. I cherish your friendship and aspire to be like you!!
    hugs,

    1. Oh, you have received your little cushion......how wonderful! I have been tracking it on it's journey to you.....my goodness it took a while to reach you. As for you sending money for the postage, I will have nothing of it. Just consider it as part of your gift. I am so very happy you love it. It was a joy to fashion it for you. As I coaxed each ribbon into a pretty flower I was thinking of you and the happiness you give to many. As for you sharing photos of some of my pretties......I don't mind in the least. I hope you enjoy a most joyous day, lovely Jann.♥

  42. I certainly hope this is not your last scrappy pretty, although I have to admit that you outdid yourself on this one. I'm not a sane quilter and I can't imagine the hours that would go into hand quilting a large quilt - I do love the end result though! Congratulations on a beautiful finish.

  51. Hi Kim, what a great quilt! I am also crazy about hexies. This is a super idea for making a quilt. I also love hand-quilting, even if I don't do much of it anymore. Somehow you are so much more connected to the quilt. I am also jealous that spring is coming your way. We are into fall, which I love, but then it will be the cold, dark, long winter.
