Spring is A-Comin!

'Tis Winter......but Spring is a-comin! So very happy about that. Come to think of it I am doing a happy dance. I am happily shooing away Ol' Man Winter round the bend in our country road as I have become rather weary of his frosty and cranky demeanor.

Small evidences that Spring is not far off are happening in this little neck of the woods. The garden has been rather dismal and devoid of colour these past months, but ever so slowly, the Spring bulbs are just beginning to awaken from their deep, wintry sleep and pop up their pretty, little heads to herald that Spring is a-comin.

It seems Spring is a-comin to my sewing room as well. I have been working on my EPP hexies, albeit slowly.  I have been stitching my pretty hexies into blocks of gleeful flowers. As I stitch these blossoms of delight, they do make me smile.

I used apple green and white polka dot fabric for the stems and leaves.

I have also been stitching smaller EPP hexie flowers using 3/4" hexagon papers. For the centres I thought I might use snippets of my lovely embroidered linens.

At the moment imaginations are colliding around in my brainpan as to how the hexie flowers are going to dance on the quilt. I am still playing with the design. I feel it is going to be another bright and happy scrappy quilt. Someday I am going to grow up and join the big girls who fashion quilts that require a lot of  accurate and precision stitching; I really, really will. You know the quilts; the ones that when you look at them, you scratch your head and wonder "how in the world did 'she' make that?????" Come to think of it, my Cathedral Window was a big girl's quilt and I didn't enjoy stitching that one at all. So, perhaps I will just stay in my world of rudimentary quilts and have oodles of fun. =)

Over the next week or so, I will happily sit in my sunny, sewing room and enjoy a little more hand stitching. As Ole Man Winter and his arctic-like sidekick, Jack Frost retreat and journey to those of you whom live way up there, I will dream of happy things.....Spring, warm sunshine, flowers, little birdies singing and pretty, blossom-filled quilts.

Let the birdies sing......"Spring, Spring, Spring"!

Yes indeedy, Spring is A-Comin!

  2. Kim, your hexies are precious. Each one speaks of the glorious wonder of spring. "Blossoms of Delight", indeed. I don't see your quilting as "rudimentary" at all. I see it as absolutely charming, beautiful, and authentic. I hope you never change your inspiring style. By the way, your bird bath is so sweet. It's early morning here and we're expecting temperatures in the high 90's. I'll be inside twining a new rug, and will be thinking of you in your cozy sewing room awaiting spring. Hugs.

    1. Yes, after a long, hot and dry Summer I dare say you will welcome the arrival of beautiful Autumn, but Winter.....it's just too chilly for my old bones. =) Though, of course, if I lived in an area surrounded by snow-capped mountains such as you, I might grow to love it. Thank you for your happy spring wishes and hugs, lovely Karen; they have made me smile. Kim Xx

    1. Haha....sweet lady, you are very kind but I am afraid the quilts I stitch are in the 'piece-of-cake, but they take a long time, box. Spring too, would have to be my favourite season. It's the colour and fragrances of all the glorious flowers; it's the awakening of everything after a long, cold Winter that excites me. Oh....and not to mention all that lovely warmth...it's hard to beat. It is early morning here and I am thinking of you with many prayers and much love. You are very sweet to have visited my place, you are a treasure. Take care, lovely Jann. Sending you a basketful of hugs. Kim Xx

  21. Oh I am loving those hexie flowers dear Kim ... just beautiful. Look forward to seeing what you create - it will be beautiful !! Today is 1st September here ... 1st day of spring & to welcome it - we have thunderstorms!!!! But the garden is beginning to spring into life ... a shame the Gardener wasn't too!!!! :-)

  22. I think you should stay put in making your happy Hexie quilts, Kim! Why waste time on doing things that don't bring enjoyment? I can see that spring is doing a happy dance in your sewing room and on your clothesline. You always bring a smile to my face with all your pretties. ❤️

  23. Such teeny-tiny little Hexies!!! And in the shape of flowers too - be still my heart. You make me want to make some too but I know I shouldn't succumb to another 'thing' that will make me have to buy more stash. No room at the inn for any more!! As for spring's arrival there - how I wish we could have a do-over of our practically non-existent summer!

  24. Big girl quilts? I think your quilts have a level of skill that I wouldn't attempt (my EPP project is over years old and still a WIP). You can't lose if you make things that make you smile and I'm guessing with all those pretty florals does just that.

  25. awwww, first and foremost, i hope you never grow up - i hope you never change your style of doing everything!!! this quilt is going to be amazing, extra special, you sure do have a talent when picking out the fabrics. and an extraordinary gift when it comes to sewing!!

you are waiting for spring - i am excited to welcome fall!! both are such beautiful seasons. i LOVE your daffodils, tied with ribbon...the color is magnificent!!!

also your pansies...are they real?? cut from your garden and placed in the bird bath?? you have a real talent when it comes to displaying and photographing your quilts and projects!!!

    enjoy your long weekend!!

  26. I always forget that as we are moving in to Fall, you are moving into spring. Daffodils are my absolute favorite flower: they come up early and remind me that winter won't last forever. They are deer and rabbit proof, and they multiply! The perfect flower for my yard.

  27. Oh my - you bring spring to our hearts - even as we are facing the end of our sunshine and warm days. Love the idea of the hexie flowers - such prettiness. Your photos are simply amazing and make me want to try some in your style - but mine just never turn out like I want. I'll keep trying.

Sitting and stitching in a cozy room paints such a pretty picture, and soon I will be indoors for the rainy season - but for now it is stitching on the deck and photographing my dolls in their Southern Belle dresses and wide brimmed hats.

    Happy week ahead my friend.

  28. Kim, I am fascinated by your hexies! They look so troublesome to put together but you just keep putting more together like there's no tomorrow! They will make the loveliest quilt! The sweet little bird bath is so pretty! How nice awaiting spring! We are transitioning away from summer and leaning towards fall. Although it is my favorite time of year for sure, some cooler weather snuck in a bit earlier than I would have liked. I have already dug out the winter fleece pajamas! But I have heard we will have a nice fall well into November so I am hanging on to that. I like winter until about Dec. 26th....then I am ready for spring but winter really hangs on in this part of the country. Hope you have the nicest spring weather soon! Take care!

    1. My little hexie flowers are not troublesome at all.....really. =) They just take a little time. Fall is also a glorious month and though I love the idea of a white Christmas with a cosy fire ablazing and lots of hot Christmas pudding drowning in a hot custard, as you say, Winter up there does seem to hang around for a very long time. I am a Spring/Summer kinda gal. Ole Man Winter seems to be hanging around a bit here, so I think you will have a lovely Fall, lovely Linda. Thank you for popping into my nearly Spring place. Kim Xx
