Hello lovely lovelies, lovely friends♡ A pleasant week has been enjoyed down here, cosying down in front of the fire while I continued to work on my fusion quilt.
My goodness it's been chilly. Ice has covered the ground most mornings but of course ice-sheathed mornings usually mean sunshine-filled blue, blue skies, which of course always cheers me up and warms dem ol' bones of mine. Sunshine♡ 'Tis one of my favourite things. In winter, sunbeams shine through the windows of my home in different rooms at different times throughout the day and I of course follow it, seeking out cosy corners, soaking up the warmth and cheeriness.
'Tis August. The last calender month of winter. I'm a wee bit excited about that. I'm filled with great joy, with the thought the spring bulbs will soon be blooming everywhere. Though, I will have to wait a little longer for the host of golden daffodils to sashay in the garden. There are smudges of yellow to be seen as the jonquils begin to stir and flower. It will be wonderful to once again have vases of flowers throughout my home.
And speaking of vases of spring bulbs throughout my home, yesterday my good husband and I drove through hill and down dale to a farmer's market and bought oodles of tulips from a flower stall. Some tulips for a dear friend to cheer her day and some pretties for moi, to cheer my day.......and Pete's. =)
When we lived in Sydney Pete and I would quite often arise at 4am on a Saturday morning to drive to the flower markets by 5am. It was the highlight of my week; and believe it or not, Pete was always up for an early Saturday morning flower market outing. All the flower growers would gather in a huge warehouse where there was bucket after bucket over-spilling with floralicousness. We would chat to the growers as our arms became heavy laden with bunches of blooms. The colours were spectacular and the potpourri of fragrances was heavenly. After our arms could no longer hold any more flowers we would sit for a while and enjoy a coffee at a cafe as we watched the hustle and bustle of the busy market. We would be home by 7 where I would arrange the blooms into vases; both for me, and more often than not for a friend or two, to put a smile in their day. I must say I do miss our early morning jaunts to the Sydney Flower Markets........but even so, I'm still happy I......we.......escaped cacophonous Sydney and settled in this far rural outpost. Besides......we kinda have our own little flower kingdom flourishing here. Just not in winter. =)
Now.....about the fusion quilt. This week I machine stitched more fabric squares together and crocheted around more squares. Later on, for Slow Sunday Stitching, I will mark some finished squares so that I can blanket stitch around the edges in readiness for crocheting. The blanket stitching is my least favourite task for this quilt as it takes a while to stitch around all the four edges. I'm using a rather large needle and it takes a bit of oomph to go through the layers. A bigger needle is required so that the 3 ply wool will fit through the eye. This needle could do some serious damage if indeed I chose to wield it. Into some objectionable person, perhaps?? Just joking.....but then....... =)
It looks rather dull and gloomy outside my window. The fire is a-blazing so I think I will blanket stitch and crochet around some squares and soak up the warmth. I might knit a little, too. I'm starting a new jumper for Lenox. I hope you enjoy your Sunday when it arrives at your place. May there be sprinkles of love and delight throughout your day♡
Until the next time.........
Nothing nicer than fresh flowers. Your squares are looking just gorgeous Kim. Have a lovely week. xx

Anna, 34° sounds perfect to me. =) Why, I will get up any hour if it means there are bunches of flowers at the end of my journey. 'Tis a strange girl, that I am. =))
DeleteHi Kim
ReplyDeleteThe flower market sounds wonderful. The quilt is really coming along.
Weather here is perfect at the moment, plenty of sunshine and temperature just right.
Thinking of you sitting by the fire, your turn soon.
Best wishes Kay cxx
Kay, your weather sounds perfect. Yes, fingers crossed plenty of sunshine and Goldilocks temperatures will be here in a couple of months. As for the flower markets; they were fabulous. Flowers, flowers everywhere. They were a vision splendid. =) Enjoy your summery days, lovely Kay. Kim Xx
DeleteYour Fusion quilt is really a lovely idea, Kim. Crocheting around the blocks sounds like a lovely lap project to while away a winter's evening...hugs, Julierose
ReplyDeleteEven though it is cold outside, it looks like spring inside with your tulips and colourful squares of fabric. Enjoy your warm and cozy knitting and crochet! Gail at the cozy quilter
ReplyDeleteIt's always an adjustment to think it's winter in your part of the world when we've had our highest temperatures of the summer earlier in the week. Flowers are such a great pick me up on a cold day or in the middle of summer here when the sun burns pretty much everything to a crisp brown. Hope you enjoyed your stitching today, you have a beautiful project started.
ReplyDeleteKim, I am fascinated by your Fusion project. I've never seen anything like it. The delicate crochet is such a beautiful complement to the Tilda prints. Can you explain more about this or point me in the direction of an earlier blog post that explains it please? Is there batting in between the two fabric squares? Will you just join all the crocheted squares together when you have enough made or do they get layered on top of something else?
ReplyDeleteHi Rebecca,
DeleteThere are a few Fusion quilts 'how to' out there on YouTube. Basically it is two squares of fabric, the top fabric and the backing fabric sewn right sides together leaving a gap for pulling right side out. There is a square of batting between the top fabric and the backing fabric. After the squares and batting are sewn together and pulled right side out blanket stitch is sewn all the way around the square allowing you to have something to work the crochet stitches into. I mark at 1/4" intervals all the way round the square for the blanket stitch. When the blanket stitch is done I then crochet around the square. Once the crochet is finished around all the squares they are then crocheted together in rows to form the quilt. I hope this isn't as clear as mud. =) Thank you for stopping by. Kim Xx
Such a gorgeous quilt! Stay cosy!
ReplyDeleteso many pretty colors in your sewing room!
ReplyDeleteTo make that Fusion quilt, do you first blanket stitch around the fabric squares, and then do a crochet round? Then somehow crochet them together? I've never done that, and the method is interesting to me! It's going to be a beautiful quilt, and just your style, Kim. The squares laid out with your pretty vases of tulips are a lovely sight!
ReplyDeleteYour fusion quilt is really different than anything I have ever seen. How big are you going to make it?
ReplyDeleteDear Kim, it's always a joy to visit your home and see what you have been stitching. And to sit by the crackling fire too, so comforting. Our winter weather here in my last of New Zealand has been very Spring like indeed, cool frosty mornings and clear blue days. We have had a bit of wind and rain, but not too bad, it makes me wonder if our Spring could be rather turbulent to make up for it. Sadly some areas of the country have been quite badly hut by repeated flooding.
ReplyDeleteJust playing catch up on your posts Kim. I think your tilda squares with crochet around look so lovely - they remind me of very fancy schmancy pot holders, though far too nice to use!!! Just to be admired. Will you join them with crochet to make a quilt I am wondering? I have not come across a fusion project before.
ReplyDeleteRegarding the tulips - I was complaining to a young gardening friend how mine did so poorly last year & she said we didn't get the cold that they needed ... so she suggested this year I put ice cubes on top of my bulbs. Can you imagine!! But I have done this - I made many cartons of ice cubes in my freezer & some nights I put several on my pots of bulbs & they have peeped through so I am hoping, really hoping they flower well. And hopefully not rot away!!! Have a lovely week Kim - keep warm! xx
Goodness - if spring is around the corner for you, then autumn is closer than I think for me. Nothing quite like spring flowers, especially tulips!
ReplyDeleteI can imagine you in the flower market! Well, spring is coming and tulips will bloom soon. I love your fusion quilt, cute squares! Have a beautiful day!
ReplyDeleteHi Kim, it's so lovely to see all of those wonderful florals in your fabrics. Spring will soon be upon you and you'll be surrounded by your own wonderful floral beauties! Take care.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed seeing all the cheerful fabrics, Kim, and hearing about cool weather and ice. Wish you could send some over, our weather is HOT.

I imagine you are getting ready for spring to come, working with those beautiful fabrics would sure get you in the mood for it I would think. Wow that was some early mornings you would go to the flower market, so nice it is something you two could enjoy together!
ReplyDeletezinnias and marigolds and weeds are blooming here - it's been hot and dry and smokey ... i follow the sun, too - but the opposite way, seeking out shade and shadow ... the table fortress that you made for baby girl is awesome - she will love her hidey hole!!! i had a small collapsible tent that the littles used to get away from each other, nothing fancy - i think it had Sponge Bob printed on the outside mesh - but a good place to be when someone just needed some personal space ... anywho, she will love you for it!
ReplyDeleteOh my, tulips and flowers on the quilt - can it get any better? Hope your week has been lovely. The pictures are delicious. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteI don't think so; but then quilts with any flower would be perfect. =) I've had a lovely week playing with my pretty fabrics. Thank you so much for your beautiful words. You have sprinkled many a smile into my day. Kim Xx
